yes. factory hard tops have been for sale on our used parts for sale forum before. They are pretty rare, I guess.

Yes, I've got one. IIRC, hard tops were to be the standard while soft tops were optional but US dealers kept ordering just the soft tops. In '78 the SC came out and the brake resevoir got in the way of the hard top so it was dropped altogether. They're rare in the US due to this. Most of the time I see one, the seller or car are Canadian, as they were still standard there.

The big thing to look for on the hard tops is the attachment clips - they work differently than the soft top, frequently break, and are NLA (no longer available).

I'm a convert. I only considered coupes when I was shopping for my first 911 a couple of years ago. Recently, while my 89 has been under the knife, I came across a 73 E targa locally advertised for $5.5k. I figured it would be pretty rough, but went to see it anyway. Against all advice, I bought it with no PPI and hoped for the best. It is leaking badly and smokes from oil dripping onto the exchangers, and also puffs when coming off throttle. I don't know if it's the speed sensor circuit or valve guides. It has 162k miles and from what I can tell, it 's pretty complete. I had a few nice surprises: it's got SSIs on it and the terrible smell inside left with the old seats and fake sheepskins. It's pretty darn solid with mostly surface rust in the front pan and quarter-sized hole in the rear seat pan. But the real point is that my drive home that night completely changed my opinion about targas. I love driving this car.

painted targa bar

My 81' 911 SC targa has a painted Targa bar. Is that standard or should it be the brushed steel look?

Anyone have a Saratoga Targa top? And have pics?
Also, what's it like? (ie: noisy, ill fitting, great fitting, expensive)

CConnor, Is that an old airhead beemer in front of your targa?
Yep! A '72 R75/5 that I have seen lots of miles with.

What is the general consensus on changing color? Right now, the car is General Motors white, a white white. Originally, it was ivory, which is pretty, but ...

I'm probably going to repaint it, and I really like the greens available in the early 70's like Ravenna and chartreuse. Assuming I keep the car for a while and that the repaint is a good one following complete disassembly of the car, would I regret not doing the original color?

Thanks in advance for the advice and testimonials.
