I'm trying to remember what the current draw was for the footwell blowers I installed last fall. Something 8 amps each. I'm sure there must be some amperage ratings for the stock evap motor and front condenser blower but I'm sure you are on the ragged edge with this. The compressor is a real big current draw by itself. I need to look at a wiring diagram but I thought the front blower was on its own fuse and relay maybe with the evap and the compressor was by itself. Maybe Kuehl will jump in.

90 degree ambient and I am getting 40 degree vent temps fan speed 2 idling woo hoo whee.. I'm sure extended hwy will get me into the high 30's
I resealed the evaporator fan lid and much much better. the fuse has not again overheated but a long ride tomorrow is planned, we shall see. but tonight..I'm parking this car and going to do some wheelies and then blow foot long blue flames out of the Buell exhaust ![]() Last edited by Seeeu911; 08-17-2005 at 04:53 PM.. |

An update on the fender condenser install.
* After a few weeks of the silver perforated rock screen I switched to the black guard with the cutout. I noticed the fan seemd to have noticibly less noise and from the sound, I could tell it was drawing more outside air. In rain and such no problems or rocks or debris in the fan or on the condenser * I replaced all the fuses from cheap ones to German brand fuses and no more problems. * My engine temps are rock solid steady with no noticable increase from the new decklid condenser. * I added a fan on/off switch. I noticed that when driving I can not hear the fan from inside at all. Outside the car or when parked it is noticble. the high whine added to the already distinctive 911 fan...for some occasions too noisy for me. So the switch allows me to turn it off without having to open up the engine fuse block cover and pul the relay. Also I anticpate when the weather cools a little I will not need the fan as much. * Vent temps are steady at 38deg very very nice. * I also have to now use the before untouched temp knob as it sometimes gets too cold in the cabin !!! ![]() ![]()

Seeeu911, sounds great. Fill us in on your low and high side pressures at idle and at say 90+ ambient.
Also, what is the cockpit temps behind driver's head, to get an idea as to how comfortable it is.

Welcome back everyone to our yearly discussion on how to spend 50 hours of your time and god knows how much money chasing 32 degree A/C.
Anybody have progress to report? For me it is early enough in the year and hot enough to warrant some type of long term solution for my weak A/C. I was at a local shop today and saw some of Charlie's components as they were being installed. This year, the heat may get me to pull out the credit card and stop trying to "design" the ultimate 911 airconditioning system on my own. Chuck |

I am putting a modified 3.8 back into my '87, and will be getting the AC going also. The plan is a 993 Compressor (already sourced) and an upgrade to most of the stock components. Not sure if the PerformanceAire setup would be more economical than Griffiths, I'l have to the check the pricing. But I will convert to R134A and do new hoses, evaporator and perhaps more. Using a v-ram intake so I was not able to use the decklid mounted parts in the last few years, but now an RS 3.8 tail puts this back on the option table.

And, if you don't have the time to do the fabrication, Charlie Griffiths' stuff is top notch. He's really spent a lot of time on R&D, and it shows. I added a ProCooler to my system, and I think it's helped me get sub-40 degree temps on a regular basis. Some people consider ProCoolers to be "snake oil," and I certainly don't have empirical data to support my belief that it helps, but the combination of the front condenser/fan assembly and the ProCooler has given me good results. YMMV.

I just talked to Performance Air about the belly mounted condensor and its a pretty good deal but I still like the idea of a 964 condensor mounted up front with its own fan, a procooler and a newer style of evaporator. Wish me luck

I think 435.00 plus they mentioned that it must be airfrieghted. Not a bad price but they did strongly recommend using R-12.

$435? Really? I think it's gone down in price. At that price, it may be my next (and last) a/c improvement.

all you poor guys that don't have rear brake duct's ali wide body slant nose, don't know what you are missing as far as haveing the place to put aftermarket a/c on the left and oil cooler on the right.

Hey!, and welcome back.
if the $435 plus shipping price (don't know if that includes hoses) on an armadillo killer is an issue you could buy an off the shelf condenser from a bigbox online store and just bolt it to the bottom of the car, make up a few brackets from homedeposit, etc. .... |

I recently installed a set of Griffith's rear fender (inside) mounted condensers; I found the kit easy to install (great instructions) and the mounting schemes clever, especially for the forward condenser. There is no cutting or hacking of the car body! The fabrication quality and materials were good (for example mostly stainless steel fasteners were supplied). The kit was well organized with parts heat sealed into clear plastic bags by installation steps. The system includes the electrical parts to make a fused fan circuit that avoids switching the condenser fan power directly through the A/C console switches (these console switch contacts can already overload in some instances). Most surprising was the light weight of the system - about 13 lbs - for two condensers, two fans and motors, brackets, fasteners, wiring and conduit, relay, fuse holder, stone guards and the extra hose runs and fittings (I made custom reduced barrier hoses for this installation).
Thus far, I consider the kit a good value although I haven't yet operated the system as I'm waiting on one final reduced barrier hose fitting to hook up to the compressor. Being a design engineer I share Charlie's frustration about recouping design and prototyping costs. The general public has little idea about development and marketing costs for they are use to buying mass produced items in which these costs are reduced to a very small per unit cost because the products are produced in quantities of hundreds of thousands or millions.
