Charlie the subdivison nazis are already on my case about the loud backfiring motorcyle coming and going at all hours of the night dammn imagine the fuss if they saw me publicly drinking a common pedestrian beer instead of a matching year merlo whilst polishing the porsche

ok.. hoses completed and installed. I made a change to the fan stone guard as well.

In reply to email here is relay wiring sketch from this install.

My install switches on the fan when the compressor is activated, it draws power from the rear engine fuse block/blower fuse. I chose not to draw power from the compressor circuit as that circuit already has a heavy load.

now, where do I get a vaccum pump ?

Yes niner11 a nice install.

Time is the enemy here. One logic is : I've spent about $1500.00 on parts and have about 50 hours of time. If I paid myself $50.00 an hour or $2500.00 my AC now has cost me $4000.00

However....the reality is I don't pay my self for work on this car...and by using this board and its fantastic advice I managed to do a $3k job for $1.5k and.... am having great fun/frustration doing it.

I have been watching this thread for a year now..geez, Bill you let that upstart, Seeeu911 pass you on the inside!
I'm also thinking you might want to re-think the stoneguard. To me it looks like the opening will draw too much dirt in that position maybe you should be pulling air from the top of the wheel well.

It's lookin good, and I know all the fun you are having building it, but:

Sounds like if your bought our system, you would have spent nearl the same in parts and you would have cut your installation time down to 20 hours or less.

Keep up the good work.

Thank you Charlie for the compliment and very nice : I told you so.... Also what do you think about Mysterytrain's comment about dirt ? also what are your thoughts about fan air direction ?

brcorp about the heat shield, I've cut a template in thin steel and am heading to a local machine shop to have a piece made in Stainless. It will bolt to the valve cover, once test fit's ok then I'll have it jet hot coated with my next project which is a r/r of the headers for coating.

You got admit this stuff is fun.

The Kuehl Condenser assembly; design is a pusher fan, located on the outer fender side. We modify the fan so that dirt or small stones that can get through the fan's guard "fall out".

The Kuehl Stone Guard uses nylon 6/6.

"Heat Shield" ; remember black absorbs, polished alum or stainless reflect.

Well time for an update.

I'm too impatient to wait 10 days for an appt at a local Pcar shop to complete the AC install. Which is basically a evacuate and refill only.
AutoZone rents Vacuum Pumps and Gauges. $199. and $99.00.
No fees you get your money back when the items are returned.

After dble checking all the connections and hoses, the system pulled a vacuum to 29" easily. I let it run for about 20 minutes then closed the gauges and waited. No apparent leaks and the gauges rock steady at just under 29” after another 20 minutes. Another vacuum this time for 3 hours in the hot sun in the driveway. Then an overnight leak down test and early Sat AM no leaks! All is good so far. Time for refill.
4 cans of R134a.

Well longs story painfully short, 1 blown sanden compressor later and 2 empty wasted 12oz cans a couple shrader valves and 2 calls to Ron at Rennaire later it's charged. (Ron is a deity sent from the Porsche Gods)
I had to fall back to my Nippondenso condenser after the Sanden (Not from Ron!) blew a valve or? Horrible knocking sound. A few hours spent chasing orings and more cans later I ran another vacuum Sunday night no problem.

11: am charged up and pressures are as follows

Outside Ambient 98 (ground temp 130)
Amount of refrigerant 36-42 oz not sure...
Fan Speed 2
High side pressure 225
Low side pressure 30 ***edited actually is 20
Vent Temperature 45

As I charged the system with cans high side pressure never got above 225 and vent temps dropped from 80 to 55 then with a fan on the deck lid, closer to 45-47...turkey baster in center vent. Car was in a garage, overhead door open, no direct sun windows / doors closed.

A small fan outside the car toward front condenser and a larger on the rear deck and the fender mounted unit humming away. (Reminded me of the Moller Sky car)

Test Drive:
With hot midday sun ambient 100+ and stop and go traffic temps disappointingly went up...to 49 and hovered there even through freeway speeds at 70mph.

A couple observations,

I am getting some leakage from my evap box which I am suspect is not fully sealed. Probably for a few more degrees

* The fan in fender well is good for keeping vent temps reasonable in stop and go. Only crept up a few degrees at a drive through line for 5 -10 minutes.

A call to my local buddy suggests a full evacuate, flush the oil and reset with exact oil amounts and gas charge from a single large can. Ah..dunno ?

I agree it’s not a laser cut CAD designed pretty
... Testing in Fla heat and almost daily afternoon thunderstorms for debris pass through to the fan will tell. Ver #1 I am concerned about air flow, ver #2 was too open, perhaps a modified version #2.

An Electrical question. With the relay installed as above the fuse in the trunk, gets hot hot ..does not blow but seemed to melt after a 2 hour drive last night. Too much current on that circuit ?

It is the #2 Fuse in the trunk. Electric seats, (seat unpluged) AC system. ( front condenser fan, evaporator blower, AC compressor) and now a relay that switches power from another source when the compressor is on. Standard 25 blue fuse. except for my relay switch a stock circuit.
