I second the inquiry on the 993 condenser, I just want to know if anyone has tried the "desert duty" rear condenser fan from Renn Aire, or the front thicker condenser.

I don't like the idea of a huge belly condenser that has plenty of opportunity to crack, flex, get hit by freeway debris, etc. I've had so many things go flying under the car, including a front bumper from a Toyota. Also railroad tracks, etc pose too much of a hazzard.

I was just told that the 964 and 993 condensors have the same dimensions and fittings. Not sure if its true but I bet someone here will chime in. Also, I'll be on the other side of the pond for a week or so and will update with pressures and temps when I finish up this project.

A 964/993 condenser assembly, with its fan, however excluding the shrouds, is a nominal 6.5" x 15" x 11".
So, get out some cardboard and build the mockup and play with it. However I recall the problem is the 6.5" thickness.
Very difficult to stuff in any fender without hacking into the inner fender walls.

The 993 unit I have measures approx 14" x 12" x 5.5" if you ignore the shrouding. The unit as it sits on the bench 14" x 14.5" x 8". The fitings are, inlet -8 o-ring (.875-14 thread), outlet -6 o-ring (.625-18 thread).

I just got a quote from southern California Porsche air conditioner shop. They would make it blow cold air in a 911SC for $5,400. Would you spend this kind of $$$ to make the air conditioner right?

Caliber..so you are saying that the overall dimension for depth is 5.5" from the face of the condenser to the back of the fan motor?

Yes, 5.5" from the front of the condenser to the back face of the fan motor, the electrial connector would add about .6".

Has anyone seen one of these installed in the rear fender area?

Eric

E Ray, have you moved ahead with using the 993 condenser and fan assembly? Anything to update on your project?
Thanks

BTTT. I want to see a 993 condenser functioning on an early car front fender w/o any modifications. I just spent an hour and a half reading through these posts and I am still unsure aabout these condensers. What really works?

My 82 (not exactly early) has a functioning 993/964 condensor that was installed without hacking up the car. I will try to get a few pics when I wash the car next time.

And how much confidence do you have in its efficiency vs the aftermarket ones posted earlier? Was it easy to install?

I don't know if its the ultimate system but works extremely well in ambient temps up to about 95 degrees. I'll try to get a few pics tomorrow

Here are a few pics of my completed A/C project from last year. I used a 964 condensor (which I later found out is the same as a 993 condensor), rennair evaporator and a procooler. Also added a center vent that is very similar to the one that Charlie Griffiths sells.

I'm running 134 right now with no complaints but through trial and error I found that it is very important to have just the right amount of refrigerant in the system. I think it was 30 oz with the procooler and extra lines. Today I finished it up by installing an oil cooler scoop on the front left fender. As soon as I get a chance I'll heat soak the car and see what kind of temps I can get. None of those temp readings in the garage on an 80 degree day! I'd like to see what it will really do with a hot motor after sitting in a parking lot for a while

Man, that looks like a slick installation! What kind of fan did you use? I'd like to know more, too, about the mounts for the condenser. I can see the bottom mount looks like you might have made it adjustable? How is the top mounted?
Thanks for sharing the pics.

Thanks, I used aluminum channel with high density foam to mount the condensor on both top and bottom. Pretty easy to see on the bottom where the mount fits tight against the lower fender. The shiny metal that you see along the bottom is only aluminum tape for an added measure of protecton

For the top a similar piece was made but in the center I countersunk a bolt that mounts to a pre existing hole in the headlight bucket. If you remove the headlight it gives access to see what I mean. For the fan I will need to look to find the exact size, sorry.

Unfortunately I had to ditch the factory washer tank and the bracket that it mounts to but the trade off is more than worth it. There is still room behind the bumper to put a smaller resevoir and pump to replace the factory unit. Only had to drill two holes for the entire installation and they are barely visible. Just to add, it was about 90 here in NC today and I saw a noticeable difference in the time it took to cool down with the new oil cooler scoop installed.
