Cool.... 300th post! Mine still works great even after the car has been heat soaked in a parking lot. Chuck

My upgrade is "done" and I am just waiting for delivery of my 30 lb canister of r134a. I still need to source a vent thermometer and a suitable scale.

the link to the limo place is dead...any suggestions where to order the AC 8041? Who makes this part, can it be sourced locally i.e. here in Dallas? It looks pretty standard, could someone stock something similar?

Try typing the part number into google and seeing what comes up. Also try things like "add on condenser" and "limo condenser".

In other news, my 930 with a condenser fan and pro-cooler leaked out all the duracool after a couple of years. The setup was ice cold, and I'm getting it drawn down and recharged with duracool. Will report new results.

Thanks, I'll try that. I'm trying to decide what would be the best bang for the buck...adding the rear condenser as like bcorp did or the Procooler. All in, I think the price for either are relatively close, not sure which is easier to implement.

The DIY heat exchanger on this thread, I think, looks like a great bang for the buck. Added condenser area plus the heat exchanger should work great. Easiest is to pay Kuehl the big bucks for a plug and play upgraded system.

You can clamp a heat shield to the exhaust so it does not radiate directly onto the condenser.

The limo place is still in business: Limousine parts and accessories - Modern Technologies Group, Inc but the specific condenser is not available any more. If I did it again, I'd use a parallel or serpintine flow condenser. I had found a serpentine that fit but lost the link. The system as I configured it worked well here in Tucson and all but the most blistering days.

Put the duel-Kuehl setup with 134 in the rear quarter of my '74 911 a few years ago. Was hit in the front and totalled a little over a year ago. The wrecked car is sitting in my garage...but the engine still runs and the air still blows in the low 30s at close to 100 degrees ambient. Great system!

Amazing experience

I had my system recharged with Duracool last week. This morning it wasn't hot, only 70s, but I was in stop and go traffic and had to turn the fan and the temperature control DOWN, I was too cold!

Stock 930 hoses, evap, condenser, but all the fans working (the fronts usually quit after a few years), a big fan added to the whale tail condenser, and a pro-cooler.

It used to be that the heat soak in the stop and go traffic would make the AC stop blowing cold, but the fan on the condenser obviously did its job, and the Duracool and sub-cooler makes the thing blow ice cubes in cruise.

OK, managed to finally track down an equivalent for the AC 8041 but mine came with two identical threaded (male) connections which are about 15.75 mm wide at the widest diameter of the threads...not sure how to measure them. What does this translate into as far as fittings 6, 8 or is this not what is measured?
I'll try to post a pic later but it looks like I might have to mount it with the tubes running vertical (relative to the ground) and some have said this is not the best orientation.
TIA

A bump for a very good thread.

Anyone have any updates or changes that have been made in the last couple of years?

Especially with the new style Evap and Condensor units...

On several cars replaced significant portions of the hot, high pressure refrigerant hose running forward on the left side with 3003 aluminum refrigerant tubing for extra condensing action. This works in a manner similar to the oil cooling lines running forward and back on the right side. The aluminum tubing is reasonably rugged (and has a good fatigue life unlike copper tubing) plus is lighter, costs less and is less bulky than even reduced barrier hose. On my '76 I also looped the tubing across and back under the center of the car - cost about $30 in tubing and fittings. Jim

What size tubing did you use and where did you get it?

Jim,

We had one guy locally who did the long runs on the car in copper tubing and said he was happy with it.

Thanks for the update.

Always glad to see this thread alive and well!!

I had good luck with the fender mounted condenser though the AZ desert heat is a tough opponent!! As I’m working on resurrecting my 930 RUF, I have grand plans of an even better performing AC system. One of things I am planning is to replace as much of the rubber hose as possible with AL tubing. AL has a much higher thermal conductivity than rubber. AL is about 100 w/(m-k) where as rubber is about 0.1 w/(m-k), so AL will shed heat 1000x better than rubber. As Jim mentioned above, it’s a way to get free condensing action and free is always good (and don't bring me down with reference to the added $$). For reference copper alloy has a thermal conductivity of about 350 w/(m-k). Though it is slightly better than AL from a thermal standpoint, it is not as structurally robust.

The other thing I plan to do is use a serpentine or parallel flow condenser, one behind the left rear wheel and one in the left front fender. As you’ll note in the thread, I previously used a fin and tube condenser. I’d like to advantage of the serp or pfc efficiency this time around. And as before, I’ll charge with R-12.

I’ll post pictures when I get started.

Enjoy the summer heat.....
