Why are the rpm so much lower in the recent test than last year? Did you put off-road tires on it?

The place I took it tried both tests (15 and 25 mph) in second gear. The first time he may have "cheated" (even though it was apparently correct, in hindsight) and run it in 1st gear. The gearing of the 930 (four tall gears) doesn't lend itself to the smog testing!

I PASSED!

My wrench just called... and a new CAT was the solution. I will post the numbers (and $$$ damage) in a few hours once I get the car!

Wow. What good news!

Ok, the numbers (fail test / pass test):

15 MPH - 1959 RPM / 2130 RPM

CO2 - 13.88 / 12.20
O2 - .46 / 3.6
HC - 47 / 1
CO - .82 / 0
NO - 292 / 112

25 MPH - 1939 RPM / 1993 RPM

CO2 - 13.90 / 12.10
O2 - .41 / 3.5
HC - 36 / 6
CO - .81 / 0
NO - 259 / 110

Obviously, the numbers dropped big time with a new CAT. This whole getting-my-car-smogged mess cost me about $415 and five months of headache!

In reading this thread, I think I need another cat. I failed SMOG on my 3.2 with S. Wong chip. It's an ROW car.

I got 15 mph @ 1,237 NOx and 25 mph @ 873 NOx, I noticed the state has lowered the standards, (allowable max's are 804 and 685 respectively).

I also got HC at 15 mph @ 73, and 25 mph @ 23 (allowable max's are 97 and 79, respectively).

On CO I got 0.19 @15 mph, and 0.15 @ 25 mph (allowable max's are 0.59 and 0.45, respectively).

Engine and cat were warm, and it has an O2 sensor at the inlet to the cat.

I have another cat that has been sitting for years, but I noticed that I didn't seal the ends. Any thoughts.

Should I remove the S. Wong chip and put the original one back in for good measure?

Change oil, adjust valves, change air and fuel filters?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

You can put 50 lbs. of air in your rear tires to help low speed drag.

So you got some 24+ years out of the 'ol cat. I'd say it was about time for a fresh one.

Is that it? Just the cat? I have an older one in my garage. What about swapping the Steve Wong chip for the original? Any other suggestions?

Hugh,

I was in the same boat as you with my '77 3.2 with a Steve Wong chip. My NO was @ 1297!! My CO was 2 below the limit. I traded my euro premuff for a good used cat, installed a borrowed stock chip and ran a tank full of techron (10oz-10gallons fuel) and retested.
I passed and my NO came down to 600+ and CO .10 points lower.
I tried unplugging one of the fuel injectors but when I did it ran alot rougher. The one cylinder would basically become an air pump and you should see a 16% improvment in smog levels. As I said I didn't try this but was willing to if I failed the second test. YMMV Good Luck

How does that help? I was the OP on this thread... and I need to get my car smogged again this week.

Put in stock chip and a less used cat and this morning she passed, blew a 289@15 mph and a 385@25 mph on the NOx. CO and HC came down as well by about 50%.

What I found that is odd, is that my NOx limit allowed by the State in 2003 when I bought it was 1106 ppm, then in 2010 (today) its been lowered by the State to 804 ppm. So it appears that the State is doing something fishy. I thought whatever the standard for your model year remained the same number.
