Technical question please

I have a 1981 911 Sc with no engine. Recently acquired an
engine from a 1980 911 Sc 3 liter. Will this engine drop in
and hook up with out any mods.

yeah you can stick any 911 engine from 65-89 in your car with no mods, dont know about the 3.6's

unbelievable

This is the very issue that disturbs me about this site. So many
people that just because they own a P-car and the limit of their
abilities is to give their car a half-ass wax job suddenly they
become an expert. So fenderguy, I hope you are not a
protologist!, next you'd be telling people that you have
successfully performed a rectal exam on an elephant.

oh by the way, what you said is not true. you can't stick any 911 engine from 65-89 in his 81 911SC car without any mods.

It should drop in with little to no modification required. You MAY have a small issue with the lambda system, as the 80 and 81 - 83 systems were slightly different, but nothing that cannot be overcome.

Whoa, man! You're not going to get much help if you really think that poorly of this BBS. If you wanted to know something very specific, ask a specific question. A general question doesn't give the board much of an idea whether you are looking for very generalized info so you can buy a motor and drop the car and motor off at the mechanic, or whether you are planning to do the work yourself and need a wire by wire description of the exchange.


A blanket statement by fenderguy, who obviously doesn't know much since he is ignoring tranny and clutch issues, fuel supply issues and exhaust issues, any or all of which may require mods depending on the year motor and the year car, doesn't help the credibilty here. But you are biting the hand that feeds you.

True not the best criticism but he's right that there are a plethora of poodles yapping away. I expect people are just trying to be helpful but you will get a lot of advice that is not well taken - I expect that is true on other internet forums - Porsche or other autos or what have you.

You need to ID the people to pay attention to....

Anyway, why don't you say what you mean by no mods. It is very "easy" to do the swap you stated, but I don't know what mods might be involved if any. It's also easy to put a 1986 3.2 into a 73 (came with a 2.4) but figuring out the wiring pin has taken a long long time.

I thought I made myself clear, mods meaning will an 80's lambda
interface with the wiring on an 81 car. Mostly, if you are familiar
with this swap, then you know what's relevant. In which case
you know what information I'm looking for. I'm too old to care any more what other people think. There are just way too many
post whores on this site, period! Most people on this board I'm
sure will agree. The primary purpose is to share information
(useful) information. If people on this board don't know about
a specific subject, then don't say anything. That's a job best
left to women!

I have lost count of the number of responses to threads regarding troubleshooting CDI systems to which Carrera guys have said:

Clearly, there are many posts that can be classified as DISINFORMATION because it was posted by someone not paying attention to what year the car is, or unfamiliar with the actual equipment on specific year cars!!!

9 people have responded. Have any of you actual performed the task he's asking about?

I like to see participation from the beginner through the expert (of which I think there are very few on this board).

I think it should be a rule that if you haven't actually performed the task being asked about that you say "I think" or "I haven't actually done it but...."

There are many of us who could give advice on what possible pitfalls are out there even though we haven't performed the job. We don't want the inexperienced to go away by any means but to categorically say what's involved requires having done it yourself.

As with anything else on the net there's a lot of misinformation out there coming from people who like to see their name up in lights.

"......but I stayed at a Holiday Inn Express last night" works too.

It's the net...and it's a free BBS. Maybe before you throw darts you ought to do as Randy suggests and invest a little time on the board identifying potential experts and weeding out the wind bags. I have seen the opposite when a guy will ask a question and nobody replies. Of course the original poster feels left out and will post again about how this BBS is a club for exclusive members and not generally helpful to the general public...blah, blah, blah.
I think your question is loaded. If someone answered with technical details about the swap, you may have been overwhelmed. You gave no indication of your level of expertise except the fact that you probably don't know a whole lot yourself about SC's from the general nature of your question.
Since you're too old to care what people think, you probably don't care that I did'nt mean my post to be a jab...stay a while and get to know some of the posters a bit better...the search function is also pretty handy...

I totally agree with that. Many of the accepted "experts" here give out advice on cars they have NEVER worked on, never even driven, and probably have rarely even SEEN.

Which has lead to plenty of wrong info, even from the "experts," over the years. Some of which has been pretty funny.

Which makes people like John Walker invaluable. It's one thing to regurgitate info read in a book - but having the experience of working on thousands of 911s over many, many years is invaluable.
