Question 3.2 weber conversion - distributor question?

I am converting my 1987 3.2 to Weber 40s and have a 'distributor question'. Yup I re-read the 70+ topics in the archives, both B.A.'s book and W.D.'s book, but still have a question.

I know I need to swap to an SC distributor since the 3.2 has no internal advance (vacuum or mechanic). I've been told a 76-77 Euro Carrera dizzy is a drop in, no mod replacement, (but very hard to find). I know the drive gear will need to be changed (due to size), but will that also change the direction of rotation of the SC dizzy? 3.2 and 3.0 dizzy rotate in the opposite direction, correct?

Or can I use an external box to control advance, and keep my 3.2 dizzy. I don't want to go with crank-fired, etc.

Anyway what is the hot tip dizzy (or external control) for the conversion?

And since you are reading this, can I just keep my stock high pressure fuel pump and use a pressure regulator to drop the pressure to 3.5-4.0 pounds, or should I go with a low pressure pump?

I'm planning on doing a step-by-step write-up on the conversion, so 'we' have a nice detailed record, so any additional information will be helpful and useful.

First of all, I can't understand why you would convert from DME to carbs unless you are changing cams etc.

that being said I can offer some info in that I have heard that it is possible to retain the ignition part of yor DME to be used with carbs.

I bet JWE could help with this.

Simplicity, history, looks (sano-engine bay), because I can (Smog inspection free area), to be different, throttle response, reliability (can fix carbs, not computer brains), R-Gruppe want-a-be, B-Gruppe want-a-be, sound.....

I want to get ride of the whole DME system (so no brains in the car, well maybe the driver might have one)

BTW cams, pistons, etc when the engine is next out.
BTW2 street car with a little track

How are you in a smog inspection free area in CA.? I have the same set up in my car but my car is a 72. You will love the throttle response.

Some rural parts of California do not require an semi-annual inspection.

Why not just drop in a 2.7 Distributor, replace the points with a pertronix and use an MSD?

I was hoping to do that, but I've been told the case hole for the dissy is larger in the 3.0 & 3.2 then for the 2.7s (Dang!)

Tom's correct, "rural county" is smog only on selling/buying (and who would every sell their 911). Hey they even issue CCWs up here for the asking.

I think you were told wrong.

I used a 2.7 distributor to plug the hole in my case while my distributor was getting worked on. It seemed to fit fine. I also just looked in the "Parts and Techincal reference" for the distributor shaft seal, and it shows one part number from 74-89. If the shaft was a different size, I would think the seal would be a different size.

Now, there might be another reason a 2.7 wouldn't work, but I think the shaft size ain't it. Length maybe?

I still have the 2.7, and I have an 3.0 turbo distributor at home. If I remember, I'll compare them when I get off work.

Tom

That wound be great if you could check. That would open up a lot more options for dizzys.

I had my 2.7 distributor re-curved by Stoddard when I switched to Webers. They even made a plate to cover up the hole where the vacuum adv mechanism attached.

Let me know if you need the specs for the re-curve. I had mine curved to allow me to run 18 degrees advance at 1000rpm (no dist adv) and then ramp up quickly ending with 30 degrees at 6000rpm (12 degrees from distributor).

been there- done this
swap the drive gear off the bottom of the 3.2 distributor with the 2.7. do the pertronix/msd thing and plug it in- it will work just fine. otherwise use the original ignition cd box the 2.7 came with. also double check to make sure the intake to cylinder head gaskets are well sealed, PMO sells some great insulators for this application
have fun

The body is a different size, but the shaft end seems to be the same. The drive gear looks the same too, but it Dave (
TRE Cup) says it is different, take his word for it.

I don't need the 2.7 dizzy, so if you want it, I am sure we can work something out.

I'm planning on doing the same conversion to my 3.2 with SSI & sport muffler. What is the better carb choice for the street, 40mm or 46mm?

Raynald,

Here are the data points for my dist. before and after the recurve. It's hard to say what type of improvement this made as I never ran the Webers with the old distributor.

When determining the timing at idle, the goal (for me, at least) was to have 30 degrees of advance @ 6000 RPM, and work backwards from there.

I went with 40's. It depnds on your cam. 40's for most 'street' cams.

I have a twin plugged setup with a 964 dist. with the inards of an SC dist. transplanted.

Richard at PMO told me to use 46s. on my stock 3.2 motor.
