993 into 72 coupe
Does anybody put a 3.6 motor and tranny from a 993 into a 69-73 coupe ??
Any big problems ? or comments ? Suspension improvement ? How does 275+ Hp run and handle in an early body ? Thanks, John |

Not directly related, but I am wondering how well the 6 speed G50 from the 993 would fit in my '89 Carrera. Rumour has it that the 6 speed has a longer nose piece and will not fit. In terms of your car, I know that the G50 in general (mated to a -89 engine) will not fit without modifying the torsion tube. The 88 and 89 Carrera's had this modification to make room. I gather it is not a trivial exercise as any time you make a modification to the torsion tube, you risk misalignment and all sorts of problems.

I think Patrick Motorsports offers a short bell housing for G50 conversions.

John,
If I am reading this correctly, your project is what is referred to as a 3.6 transplant. There are numerous threads about this; check the archives. BTW, if my information is correct, you need a 'short bellhousing' 915 tranny to mate your 993 engine into a '72. I know, I was about to do the same thing. My engine is still engineless, in the garage. Good luck. |

any 915 will work, you need short bell housing conversion for the G50s.
Yes it can and has been done, it's all about how much you want to spend I guess.

Swapping in a G50 is a lot of work, even when you buy the Patrick parts. You'll need to update your pedal cluster and move the motor further back (hurting weight distribution), among other things. Welding will enter into the mix.
A 1995 993 motor still has OBD-I electronics, which makes for an easier swap. 1996-1998 motors are OBD-II, and can't be chipped in the same way. Different vendors will re-flash the read-only memory in the DME, but it's not cheap. 1996-1998 European motors are OBD-I, and are highly desirable as a result. The most cost-effective path is a 964 motor and a 915.

Im in the middle of doing it now. A 95 993, but with a 915 box into my 72. WAY to much work for the G50 setup.

It might look something like this when done ![]() Dennis Kalma, look here for info on the 6 speed transplant MPO is that even a G50 is too much work for the possible benefits, 915s work fine for this app. but if you enjoy a challange.....
