Reading Wire Sizes From Factory Manual
Can anyone tell me what measuring scale Ze Germans used on their workshop manuals? Below is an example... What wire size is 1,0 or 1,5?

I assume it's the same as my other maintenance manuals where the number represents the cross sectional area in square millimeters. Why they chose to use a comma rather than a decimal point I don't know.
1,5 would be 1.5 square mm. 0,75 would b 0.75 square mm, etc. |

Exactly correct, cross section in square millimetres.....much more sensible than this miserable guage stuff....

So, how do I convert square millimeters to roughly the same gauge equivalent? I'm obviously not thinking about this right... Must be my public education. ![]() Thanks, Skip

Area equal Pi * radius squared or:
Area = Pi * r^2 So radius = square root of area divided by Pi or r = sqrt (A / Pi) Therefore: "1.5" has a radius of .69mm or a diameter of 1.38mm "1.0" has a radius of .56mm or a diameter of 1.12mm "0.75" ...................................diameter of 0.98mm Maybe someone can convert that to gauge? -Chris

The headlamp wires are a bit larger than 16 ga, but smaller than 15 ga ... 1.5 sq. mm vs 1.65 sq. mm ...

Now I get it. Here's a table that converts from AWG to CSA (Cross Sectional Area - in square millimeters).

Cars would never be able to comply with NEC as to ampacity......as correct as NEC ( National Electric Code) may suggest.
Cars' use will end up with much lighter gauge for the given amp load...a function of cost and weight concerns. Wil
