Harry,
She's picking up the car from my place tomorrow and meeting some of the GruppeB gang. As everyone suspected this shop, who shall remain nameles for now, really tried to give Liz the shaft. They overcharged for work done, hacked up the permatune trying to get in it, and completely mis-diagnosed the problem. Not only that but they also left some things (like the headlights and turn signals) disconnected. Just posting this as a warning to others: If you are not comfortable with the shop your car is at, get a second opinion! Intuition is a good thing! 1. The ignition module (Permatune) was NOT bad. I bench tested it, checked out fine. Went through the ignition system and found the plug-wires were somewhat dicey. They are being replaced. 2. Some funky and rather suspect wiring was tidied up and/or replaced 3. Brazilian made Bosch coil was weak. A replacement got the car running. 4. The deccel valve was gummed up and disconnected causing bouncing idle off-throttle and stalling. Check/measure/djust the CIS 5. The shop overfilled the oil by 2-3 quarts... Messy! Fixed several other little things, but the car runs great now and rev's as good as any 2.7L street motor I've seen. It is reasonably clear to me that they figured Liz as a fish and were ready to take her to the cleaners. Kudo's to her intuition on this one. Needless to say this was NOT a $3500 job. ![]()

Good ending to sicking situation!!!!! I was not so lucky with my first 914. Even though the 1.8 L-jet system isn't as expensive as the 911 systems, i was reemed for $2800 parts and labor, and it STILL wasn't fixed. I got fed up and had them put carbs on. The shop... I worked there, the owner was a longtime friend of my dad, and they still charged me $80/hr. Plus when i put in a pointless ignition, they had hooked the coil wires up backwards, frying it instantly. They wouldn't take the part back.
It sounds like they had no clue as to what they were doing, and Liz's wallet was going to be their education.

I have a 1.94MB audio of a young girl being sold headlight fluid. She's also asked if she wants the high performance halagon fluid or regular fluid, + +. If anyone wants it do a Pelican e-mail and I guess put pelican, etc in the subject. It is funny.

Hi All! I was just reading the other post about the parts problems. Very curious. Ronin - I heard that clip too and thought it was quite funny. It makes me cringe when I think about what these jags thought of me! Anyway, Chris to the rescue. He exceeded all expectations. I owe him and all of you back-seat mechanics, a tall cold one!

This might be a stupid piece of 11th hour maintenance guessing but have you tried monkeying with the idle adjustment screw? On my way home from picking up my SC, I cimbed nearly 1500 feet in altitude and coming to a stop would usually shut my car off. Three turns to the left and the car was leaned out enough to run like a champ after that.
The best part is that this won't cost you a thing although the $30 bucks to have your mixture set right is well worth it.

I defer to Chris and the other experts on this one... Didn't you submit a post regarding this a while back?

I'm glad you got your problems worked out. This is no way to have a first Porsche experience. At least your second Porsche experience was good.

Two separate problems Brother, but they were interacting.
The low idle/stall was due to the decell valve (the air plate bypass) being disconnected. Not sure why. It had been for a long time and got "dirted up". The weakened coil wasn't putting out enough spark to keep the car running when the idle bounced down to 500RPM or less. Replaced the coil and plug wires to get it running well. Removed and cleaned up the deccel bypass and it started working as well.

Somebody monkeying around with the CIS was likely the cause of all of Liz's problems. When the City wrench got it, he went after the wrong thing and screwed the Permatune up (fortunately it was not too screwed up), but the disconnected decel valve should have been a clue.
(Edit: after reading the below comments, I think I should point out that I did not work on Liz's car...the credit goes to Chris). Last edited by MotoSook; 12-01-2004 at 12:54 PM.. |
