Want to rebuild 915 - dumb idea?
I am on a serious budget and I was thinking about buying as many of the parts used as possible. Mine is a 73 915 so I want to go with the later synchros and sliders. I know some of the parts need to be new but it seems like if you could find goodlooking sliders and a few other things I could save $400-$500. Am I nuts... I have more time than money and I guess I would not mind pulling it back out if it was not quite perfect the first time.
Thoughts... Oh.. it is grinding pretty bad into 3rd and requires a gentle touch in 1st and 2nd.

used parts like shift sleeves are what come out of a transmission on a rebuild. they're generally worn enough to require replacement. they may work with new syncros and they not. do you want to chance that? some people flip the syncros, same result. 2nd time is always easier.

Gary Fairbanks (and well known transmission builder) sells or used to sell good used 3-5th dog teeth. I imagine they are the 5th gear dog teeth from transmission that have had all the dog teeth replaced. 5th gear doesn't get that much wear.

Thanks for the info guys.
I was thinking that some people go in and replace everything and some of the stuff is not really worn and they toss perfectly good parts. Like the 5th gear stuff Chris mentioned. Its one of those phenomena that is specific to Porsche and other high end cars. People do preventative maintenance and replace parts that budget guys can still use.....

Frankly I think the 3-5 dog teeth (and possibly synchros for same) are probably the only used parts you'll find in usuable condition. The 915's seem to wear pretty fast compared to other gearboxes IMO.

Early 915 trans had their input shaft seals inserted from inside the case. You need to check this out. Perhaps a little machine work on the case would allow you to use the later input shaft seal that is inserted from the outside.
