What is this stuff on my floor called?
It covers the whole floor of my car and is breaking off in places. What is this stuff called? Next, is there a better replacement?
How difficult is this to remove and should I even worry about it? Many questions I have a few answers to give... Thanks for any advice!

I call it sound deadener, I'd take it off and leave it off. It adds weight, and these cars aren't supposed to be quiet anyway.

Underbody coating. It adds weight and some mild insulation properties, I suppose.
I've heard it's a pain to remove with a large scraper or other tools. It probably won't hurt to just remove the broken pieces as they come apart. One technique I've heard used was to cover it with dry ice until it's really cold and brittle and then whack it with a hammer to shatter it. Don't forget your eye protection. I plan to try this with my car one day in the future........ Rob

do not touch it. back away. evacuate your family from the area. ship the affected unit to me. include several thousand dollars to cover hazmat handling fees.

Too big to fail

There's at least 3 different of different materials used here. There's the black sheets stuff on the horizontal sections of the floor - that's what's breaking off in clumps; then there's brush-on seam sealer - you can clearly see the brush marks in your pic; then there's the spray-on undercoating, which will have a bumpy texture.

Thanks guys. I was not sure what to do when I lifted the carpeting and saw what bad shape portions of the coating was in.
So a pain to remove, eh. Well I guess I'll just leave it be for now. On to other destruction...

I took mine off in less than a hour for both sides. Someone apparently weighted it at 18 lbs. I live in So cal so don't need the insulation it might provide and have a sports muffler so don't miss the sound deading, but my car has been on a serious diet since I got it

Well I've got a 82 I took the seats out and just started with a scrapper. If you stay under it at the right angle it just peels right off. I did presoak one area in a little motor oil and it lossen up everything. I had heard horror stories but mine could not have been easier. It's under the carpet if you can't get it done all at once any ways. I woulld avoid the dry ice and hammer route, I don't like hitting my car with a hammer, it seem to take it personnally

Cdnone1,
Thanks for the tips. Did you put any sealer to keep out the rust?

naa. it should be galvanized and it never sees any weather here on the left coast. I've had it off for about a year and had the carpets out to put carbonfiber seats in 2 weeks ago and I didn't see any rust. I live by the beach so there is a lot of salt in the air but it seems to be holding up fine. A top coating would just add weight any ways

Cdnone1 - Are you saying that the black sheets stuff on the horizontal sections of the floor wighed 18 lbs.? Is that for front and back together?
Or is the 18 lbs. for that stuff + some other stuff? Great color BTW.

PS - for anyone wanting to retain sound insulation but have a lighter car, see my floor covering thread in the last few days for some ideas.
