Appraise this SC (lots of pics, dialups beware)
OK experts, appraise this SC for possible purchase.
2 owner California car (1st owner had it 13 years, current owner has had it for over 11 years), bought in So Cal and garaged in So Cal since new. 78 SC. First service was done by the dealer in '78, serviced at Andial since then. Every single service record/receipt, starting from the original window sticker. No mods except spring clutch, pop off and Carrera tensioners. 116,000 miles. Guaranteed no broken head studs. Runs and drives like it looks. Side view. ![]() Factory fuchs, 7s and 8s, refinished by Robert Woods. Tires have less than 50 miles on them. ![]() Trim, rubber and moulding. ![]() Seats and interior. ![]() ![]() Engine is, ummm, clean. Passes Cal smog with the pump put back on. ![]() ![]() ![]() Not that you'd ever want to eat off an oil tank, but . . . ![]() What do you think? |

Original Paint?
Is this yours? That is an outstanding example of a 78. Most I've seen in that condition (and worse) were claiming half that milage. I'll say 15-21k . . .depending on how quickly you need it sold. Cars that clean really stand out, and can grab the emotional buyer.

God, I'd be scared to drive it. Looks like a concours car.
Do you plan to keep the engine compartment that clean?

wow...that does not look like a 116K mile car. The engine is sick.
$18K plus or minus. Depends on how it drives... |

The value of that car,.... $5000. No one will want it. It's got no spoiler!
Now send me its location and I'll come over and take it off your hands for $6000. ![]() That car will probably fetch $18,000 give or take a couple of grand. Like island said, depends on how fast it needs to be sold. WOW! I wish I could buy it. |

Car looks really great. One question though. Was the car repainted? There seems to be some kind of bubble in the paint where the rear fender meets the door striker panel (or whatever it is called).
That's the only thing I could see that is remotely wrong. Was the engine recently rebuilt. Looks brand new.

Far out. I can imagine the conversation when they took it in for service.
"Hi. Time for the bi-annual service. Oh, one other thing, I noticed a couple of dirty fasteners on the engine - could you have a look at those too please." It is purdy. It would be an NZ$40k car, so US$18k is probably not far off...

So where exactly did this car rack up 116k? on a treadmill in the owners garage? LOL. Absolutely beautiful, I'd jump on it given the chance.

This car does not represent 116K miles. Except for what looks like black painted trim around the side windows, the car looks showroom from the pictures. It would cost $15,000 to make a car look this good...probably more...and lack of oxidation on any of the aluminum or cadmium plated items in the engine compartment indicates either a factory new replacement engine or alot of money spent on replating, polishing or replacing all the engine parts. If the engine is new, I think the car is worth closer to $20K considering what it costs to get a car into this condition. A new car that looks this good costs three times that easy. It may be older technology, but it looks showroom. A close inspection is required to see if all the detail work is as good as it looks. That paint looks like it's still liquid!

That is a very nice car! I'm going to snag the pics as my car is a 77 (same almost everything) in the same color and they'll give me something to aspire to for my car's engine compartment!
That definitely looks like a worthwhile car! -Chad Last edited by chumphries; 08-28-2002 at 02:08 AM.. |

That IMHO should bring in about 20K.. hell i paid 17 for mine and it's not quite that nice .. well no it IS NOT even close to being that nice.. that thing looks NEW... 17 or 18K would be a steal. and you all know it.... i don't care what anyone says the car should go for .. it really depends on the buyer and how he feels about a certain car .. THAT is what depends on how much it will selll for and I would pay 20K for that if I really wanted an SC cuz ya just don't find to many in that condition.

I'm wondering who would sell such a perfect car. I mean, that's what most of us are striving for. Then there is some guy who has no idea of what he is giving away... One day he might regret selling it.

The only problem with that car...
is that those pictures were taken in 1979.

I don't see how you can go wrong with this car. Look at the seats for crying out loud!!!! No way those things have 116K on them. Not unless the owners treated them after each use. Also, it takes alot of time to make an engine bay and undercarriage look that well. I know 'cause I did it (not nearly as detailed or clean). Of course it's easy to keep the car looking that way if it was meticulously cleaned from day one. Probably not the case because few people are that anal. Look at the pic. showing the oil tank drain plug. Virtually squeaky clean, even on the inner part of the rocker panel which gets its fair share of road grime in a hurry.
This car rocks. This thing needs NOTHING (based on the pictures). Still, it's a 78 so there's the potential for some sort of mishap in 24 years. Looks pretty impressive anyway. Only pass on it if you couldn't bear to drive it.

I would say that car is the ultimate "Garage Queen" 2002 -1978= 24 yrs. 116K miles / 24 yrs = 4800 miles / year.
It has likely been part of a multi car family all it's life, living in So Cal ( like, TOTALLY benevolent weather) and with all maintenace done by Andial, this is virtually a new car. I would say this is better than a time capsule car, because it has been preserved in use, not in storage, which causes all kinds of problems. Worth whatever one will pay for a 911 SC, best example. Just my opinion, I could be mistaken... ![]()
