How important is documentation

Im going thru my 73 T and was wondering about some post I have read stating that documentation is very important. I can understand if I sent the engine to a known shop to be rebuilt to keep the receits but if I buy a carpet set is there really any need to keep the receits? I have taken pics of the car down to bare metal and in primer, is this enough? I plan on replacing all the bushings and anything else that is in need.

I really don't want to file and keep every receit for everything that goes into the car. If the wife had any idea what the cost were their would be hell to pay.

Just what do you guys keep and is it really all that important? I would think that a PPI would be more important than a bunch of paper in a file.

I keep everything except the gasoline receipts. The paper will translate to extra $ if/when you ever sell your car.

Keep everything, but hide it from your wife.

I agree with Jim but it is really your choice.

Having documentation for everything can be valuable to you when you want to find some source (again) or just remember what you did. It also raises the value of the 911 if/when you trade for another. Even having a spread sheet with fuel mileage shows your penchant for details. This is particularly true with rebuilds and major restorations. Most would discount as somewhat inadequate anything that isn’t well documented. I know that I would pay a premium for a well documented 911.

I track absolutely everything. Miles on each drive, gas receipts, purchases of absolutely everything that applied to the car, notes on possible problems, everything. My hope is that if I ever decide to let my baby go, that prospective buyers will understand how deeply I've cared for this car, and the level of attention to detail that I've applied in my maintenance.

But then, I come from the Navy Nuclear Power community -- we track details like nobody else. YMMV.

Garage
I track everything as well. And have all sorts of log books.
Guess you all know how exciting my friday nights are now.
If you don't want to, yet feel it could help the sale later just stuff them by month into an accordion type folder it and let the next owner go through them.
