I am such an idiot, Please help

Okay so I was going to start getting the car out of storage and I can't find the key anywhere. Yes it was my only one, I had meant to make a couple of copies.

Anyway.

Now what, does a locksmith make a key, or do I put new locks everywhere?

Humbly I thank you for any advice. You can laugh too if you must.

I'm not laughing! I was working on my car in a body shop. Some vandals went through the cars in the shop. (1970E) They threw away all of the car keys that they could find, including mine. The shop was out of town. I had a key cut from the vin number. I would explore this route.

Will the Vin number work for a 72?

Any idea how much a locksmith would charge?

I'm thinking the VIN method won't fly for a '72. If it does, let me know! It would be helpful to me as well.

If you can manage to break into your car and then remove one of your locks, then you can take it to the locksmith and it'll be pretty cheap. Otherwise you're paying for a housecall at hourly rates.

I remember the incident. The bodyshop was about 45 mi from my hometown. I called a locksmith, and he asked for my vin. He cut me the key (for a 1970 E) and gave me the code to make an original. I still use the key he made.

Good old AAA.

K. lost her key to the Land Cruiser (in the flower bed as it turned out) and we couldn’t find the spare. The AAA locksmith showed up and made a new key and spare – no charge. The new key worked far better than the almost worn out original. A few days later I took the LC over to the locksmith (now with all the keys) and for $7 we have spares and everything works even better.

I think I paid $150 when I lost the keys to my F250HD here in Northern Virginia. Since then the first thing I do if I only have one set is to make spares. Both 911's only came with one key.

I have spares made for the ignition key, the alarm activators, and the wheel locks. I am not paranoid, I have just paid those prices once before. The inconvenience is the worst.

But it sounds like there are guys out there that can cut keys with an early chassis number - I'm totally impressed and stand corrected.

Grady as usual I am in your debt, I hadn't thought about AAA, not I just have to push it into the street infront of the house and dial 222.

I have only one set of the 3 keys you mentioned and would like to get a duplicate for each. Question, if I go to a local locksmith would he have the blanks for these three keys? Or would I have to order the blanks from porsche and take them to the locksmith?

What kind of storage?? Was the car even locked up where you had it?

I only ask because maybe you just tossed the key under a floor mat or in the ashtray, or glovebox....

Did you set the key down on a board or shelf or door sill on the side of the storage place???

Not being a wise guy, just giving some ideas of places to look...

(been there, lost that...)

Yeah it is my garage unlocked, I have looked around all of the usual places and come up empty. I even got my wife to go and look around, she can find anything, but no luck. I know it should be somewhere obvious and easy and at some point I will stumble across it and kick myself for being dumb, I just know it.
