Considering joining the 3.6 club
Well, I've played with many motor options and after the many reviews a 3.6 looks to be the best route. I had to get a new roller and bought Phil Ulrich's '77 sunroof coupe out of. Flagstaff, AZ. I am continuing with the major suspension mods, the 935 style look in mostly fiberglass (whole front end, side rockers and rear 935 tail). Big 345's on the rear and 225's up front. So, I'm in the planning stages and putting monies together for motor/tranny and of course body and paint work. A few questions to ponder.
1. What yr. 3.6 should I look for. I realize V/R is more but I assume it is worth it? 2. Should the 915 I find be better with the 8/3/1 R/P? with LSD? 3. Whom do I contact to purchase an install kit? 4. While the motor is out I want to beef it up a little . what mods would be best for monies yet reasonable? I have heard super cup cams, a chip and good exhaust. Anything beyond that? I'm not really looking at the 3.8 option due to increased cost and replacing cams should be do-able with motor out. Appreciate the advice. I want to start prepping for this in the near future as long as I can keep funds rolling in. I'm probalby figuring 15 to 20K I assume for motor, install and body work. John. Hopefully less!

You might want to do a search...many of us have done the swap. My neighbor did it himself....but he "was" single and had the time..."I" bought a "crate" motor from Steve Timmins. Have had no problems...one or two other have had issues with Timmins.
Take a look at the posts and decide. Timmins is in Maryland. Some have bought motors from Germany...the dollar is very weak against the euro now...probably not a good value..... As to years to get....well, there is a lot of debate on that too. The later varioram motors have the most hp, but are difficult to install due to anti-theft computer issues and codes...

You can learn a lot from the FAQ on Steve Timmins' site. You can find it here.

IMO a 993RS or 993tt would be best but expensive ~$25k US for the former and who knows what for the latter
Next best would be the 993ROW OBD1 cars w/o SAI/imobilizer etc. Next a '95 ROW OBD1 followed closely by a '95 US OBD1 Try to avoid '96 US OBD2 because of chipping issues plan on spending some extra $ for a really good oil cooling system and more for an exhaust system. Steve's site that Jack posted has a lot of very good info, I would buy the kit from Steve.

Yes, I emailed him and he has several options available. I have ability to do install. what about the super cup cams? Are they worth the extra effort or just stick with the V/R 3.6 and chip and exhaust? Whats a good exhaust to use with the heat option. Looking at about a '95 motor.

993SS mech or 993RS hyd. are a nice addition, check w/ some of the cam grinders for other possible streetable choices, John Dougherty(Camgrinder) hangs out over at the engine building forum and has some good ideas.
You should use bigger valves w/ the cam and clean up the ports. Install new guides etc wyait(while you are in there). If the rev range is extended plan on upgrading rod bolts as well. The valves you need to buy will depend on the base engine and cams chosen as well as the design parameters,

Timmins also has some pretty cool new 3.6 swap goodies. A great set of headers that could accommodate cats if you need them, brake upgrades and other stuff. Pretty nice one-stop shopping. I got a '97 Vram and conversion kit from Steve.

He is looking like the best route. I've got heavy suspension mods, 935 body kit all going into a '77 sunroof coupe. For the money the 3.6 seems the best choice.
