I took the engine out, and did a re-check on the cam timing, both hit right on at 3:15 so I did nothing to the cams.

However! I took out the dizzy and then put it back in again, but unlike the first time, watched for the rotor rotation to hit right at the number one wire at TDC. (last time all I did was intstall it not looking for any meaningful rotation, so I think it may have been in the vicinity of no.1 but not close enough, only close enough to fire only one cylinder)

Last, I redid the valve adjustments.

The engine is amazing. Really "winds up", and it does not leak!

What's amazing (to me), is that upon re-install of the dizzy, the points fell to rest right on the start of the lobe, and just starting to open (as you previously suggested) I can only think that the dizzy on the 911E with the gear meshing, were engineered to fall in to place this way.

Kind of exciting working around a clean 38 year old engine and tranny.

I started with Wayne's 20 minute first break in procedure today (back of the book). As predicted, all the assembly lube (and what ever else in there), blew all over for about 10-15 minutes.

Then things cleared nicely, and followed the advice and changed the oil. I used 10W-30 Castrol GTX on this first one. Did not see any metal parts in the oil or on the magnets.

.......another thing no smell of gas in the oil! (as before the rebuild).

.......AT first I thought the engine was missing on one cylinder, until I realized I had the screws tuned in and was too lean. Put them out half turn, and all fired smoothly. I'm trying to find best idle next, and then get the coupler just right before going out of the driveway.

I, for one, congratulate the guy more for not running away from the BBS after being called a few things unkind than for his success in getting the motor to run.

Day #2 breakin.....OUT on the road!!

Doin the Wayne thing for the breakin. Out on the road, varied RPM, tried to stay away from idle. (had too anyway)

1. Engine, (compared to before rebuild), sounds like a small jet plane at the above 2000 RPMs.

2. I'm really pleased.......but...... haven't found correct idle.

a. car will stall at a stop.
b. sounds like it's missing at idle (but not at higher RPMS, At higher RPMs it’s definitely hitting on all six)

3. But the idle mixture screws I have about 1/2 turn below Haynes, because I want no gas in the oil.

4. Did the smell test after today's drive, and no smell of gas in the oil! So I guess I will go ahead and turn the carb screws out some more and hopefully will smooth the idle.

Glad to see that its finally running. NOW the fine tuning and break-in begins!

When you have a problem like this, its always best to go back to square one and confirm everything. Now that its running and you have learned keep moving forwards. The 911 is not that difficult of a car to work with.
