i know this is an older topic but i've been doing a little research and have to compliment this resourceful topic. lots of nice wheels and lots of respect for the "out of the box" approaches by the DIYers.

I may be bumping this thread before too long myself. I pulled my Al Reed silver powdery RSR type finished wheels today and set them under the tub as a precuation since the car was going on jackstands. Sprayed some castrol purple degreaser in my engine bay and proceeding to scrub everything down. Never occured to me to cover those wheels until I glanced at them from under the car and saw the little white spots all over the where cleaner had spattered

That's what it did to your engine block as well.

All aluminum in fact is attacked by these fiercely alkaline chemical cleaners.

I had some rifle magazines that were Parkerized and still in the original cosmoline, until I decided to soak them in Simple Green to cut the waxy grease off. It did the job on the grease, and cut the phosphate Parkerization off as well. Thanking the Gods that I only tried it on one mag, I never did that again.

Sherman - other than the purple degreaser incident, is that al reed RSR finish easy to keep clean? This is the finish I like most but it looks very porous. Is it easy to wipe off brake dust, grease and grime?

They havent been bad at all, but honestly, I havent driven it much in the last year. Ive heard since I had my wheels done that Al only clear coats these wheels, no anodizing, so it was only a matter of time before they started getting dirty. The vasoline trick may work but I was too pissed to even try it.

FWIW, Ive cleaned two aluminum engines and god knows what else with the Purple Castrol cleaner and never had any issues. It obviously wasnt my intention to get it on my wheels and then to let it sit for several minutes today, but its not anywhere near as aggressive as some of the other cleaners.

Alfred Tan:....some questions on your faux RSR finish using Wurth rattle can...

The pics show two cans.... self-primer and high gloss silver lacquer.....

In my other thread about DIY RSR finishes....Weidman himself responds and says for DIY...use only enamel rattle can and no primer. You used lacquer and primer.

1.) How come your finish isn't gloss ..even though the can indicates such (actually, not really desired if you're after the RSR look).

2.) Can you describe the step-by-step of what you did? Any chance this can be done with the rubber still on the rims, if you mask carefully?

somewhere in my research i read that a deck of playing cards are great for masking the tire from the wheel.

i've had great success w/ duct tape. take a strip long enough to cover the circumference of the wheel, and fold it onto itself lengthwise so only about 1/3 of the tape's width remains exposed (the sticky side)

wedge the sticky side between the tire and wheel, it's a little easier to stick it to the wheel than the rubber, but it will give you a slight edge that remains unpainted, though w/ dirt/brake dust you hardly notice it

if you get the tape to stick the the tire, then do it. that way you can get the spray to cover the little edge that meets the tire too.

The wheels were fully polished so i did the primer thing to give the paint some bite. No idea why it did not come out glossy, but i like the look The primer might have had something to do with it since it left a rough'ish surface for the paint to go on.

Pretty simple process, spray primer wait 24 hrs, spray paint and go over with steel wool.
