Narrow body or RS-look -- which way would you go?

I like building these cars even more than living with them, so when they're done -- or almost done -- I sell them.

This is my latest project: a '72 E coupe. I plan to restore & repaint to the original Viper/Kelly Green.

I have a set of SC flares, ducktail & 'S' type fiberglass bumper already...

But since it'll be over a year to finish this car, should I count on the continued premium RS-looks are bringing over narrow bodies?

Keep in mind that this car will not have its original engine, but most likely something nearer 175-200HP...

It's hard to top the look of a properly done and setup '73 RS

If I had an Rs-clone I'd say both.
7's on a narrow body with 3.2/3.4/3.6/3.8 is a nice compromise

RS replica, since it's rareness as a numbers matching 72E is already lost.

I can't imagine how you could build a nice RS clone starting w/ that and make $$ when you are done, no matter what the market does. The cheap way to get into a nice clone is after some other poor fool "invests" the time, money and frustration into building it.

I know that it helps if you can do some of the work yourself, but still it will cost you ~double whatever you are budgeting. The price of parts ain't exactly going down with the worthless dollar. Look at some of the recent sales, ie. $100k+ to build, sold for $40k, etc.....

5 years ago I would have killed for the RS look. Now, I still love them, but everybody's doing em. Go narrow/cool retro like Bob Tiltons car or, if you want a hot street rod, go all the way to RSR.

I went with 7's on the narrow body. Give the buyer some extra paint and give HIM the option of the flares. You could even sell him the flares or install them for him after the purchase. Bill, you know what you are doing, but Denis has a point. I'd take the conservative approach.

For years I wanted to do an RS-look with a 3.0 or 3.2. When I bought my '72 T and fit the 7s under it, I realized that the classic narrow body was definitely more of a sleeper. I've got the bigger engine bug BAD now. But she's gonna stay skinny.

If you are building to sell it.
Keep it narrow, perhaps your turn over imminent and your profits greater.
My cup of tea would have a little more body, it's steeping now.

Denis, you're right that it's hard to make a profit on a car built up from a shell... I am depending on a 'donor' car -- in fact, I thought I had one, but it appears to have slipped away.

Milt, I'm aiming for something that looks like a brighter-colored version of the PWD72s car...

You guys have me tilting toward keeping it narrow. Somehow it seems to me that the vintage green goes better with the original body:

Bill, I say stay narrow, you can always go wider later if you want to, going skinny is a bit more difficult. That being said I am a bit biased because I can stare at my car, still narrow and my dad's with SC flares and debate endlessly in my mind which is cooler. Now that I got that out there better still be some space over there because my car is coming over sooner than later. Hope to run into you again, best of luck,

ryder

I guess the owner of the yellow one (me) is "some poor fool..."

BTW: I'm far below $100k...being "some poor fool."

David, I like your car but I would not include it in this discussion of '73 Carrera RS replicas. We are talking about people who build a car from spec, more like Jack Olsen's or some of the nice ones on ebay lately.

All of us have spent upgrade $$ on our cars, never to be recovered. Different deal than what he is contemplating.
