How many here started off in 914's?

and it got me to thinking about my old 914. I really wanted a 911, but couldn't quite muster enough of the ready at that time of life, so I settled on a 914. I always thought they were cool cars. Unlike 911's, they can look very homely in some trim levels. In others, they can be very attractive. I've seen a 3.6-powered full-cage 914 with welded top and flares at the vintage races at Laguna Seca, and it was a farkin' brute. Hurley Haywood steadily and relentlessly crushed everything in his path despite a poor starting position that year. It was a joy to see and something I'll remember for a long time.

The point of this is; I wonder how many here started off with and ended up loving 'the teener'?

P.S. Here are a couple shots of the old girl. For some reason I find it easier to ascribe the female sex to a 914 than a 911. A female friend asked me lately what my 911's name was. I had to say I didn't really have one. It's too masculine to have a female name. It's too businesslike to really have a name. I just prefer 911. Naming your cars is a whole other thread I suppose...

My first Porsche was a 1973 914 1.7l, yellow and black
no pic available. When I first saw one I thought it was the ugliest car ever made............but after I drove it it looked much better.

Started with a carbed 1.7; eventually it was heavily modded. Went to the 911 as a more usable street car, but missed the 914-a good one is as primal as an early 911 but handles better. Started to look for a car to convert to a 6, and after a false start or two found one already done for less than the conversion would have likely cost, plus it came with coilovers, multiple sets of springs, Quaife, carbs, Electromotive igntion, 16x9's all around and other goodies. Its more of an ax terror than a street car, but it'll get used on the street for fun as well.

There's nothing like the flat six wail and the induction noise of six weber throats coming from six inches behind your head.

I had a florescent (Ravenna?) green 1974 914/2.0 in the late seventies. It was all I could afford but I loved it. The rust got the better of it. Fast forward to 1994 when I bought my 911. Great car, but not a 914.
In 2001, I was checking the Ebay ads and ran across an original 914/6 with a 3.2 motor for sale locally. One test drive was all it took.

When I was looking at purchasing my first car (age 19) I thought I could only afford a VW. Flipping through the Auto Trader I saw this 914. Here is picture of the car taken in 1989. You can't beat the go cart feel of the 914.

my first p-car was a 73 914 that i picked up for 800. found it next to a barn in Canton, NC.

guy said it wouldn't start, but just needed a battery. I bought it the next day without even test driving it (2nd car, figured i could screw around with it)

changed the oil, put in a new battery and drove it home.

ran it for about 18 months before the engine seized going up the balsam pass.....

by that time the rust damage was so bad on the frame under the battery, it wasn't salvageable.

rebuilt the engine and put it in a 72 VW van that i drove through the rest of college.

I was actually looking for another 914 in 02 when I found my 911.

Started off with a white '71 1.7 in 1992, then a silver '76 2.0 in 2000. I would love to have a six someday.

I started out with a '72 914, moved to a '73 2.0 914 and finished up with a '73 911T. Sold them all and now I have a '77 911S with a 3.0.

I am looking for a project 914 for a 6 conversion.
