project 72 coupe (need some help)

Hi
need some help here
I have finaly found my project car. ( I hope)
im looking at a 72 sunroof coupe , the car itself looks like it can be saved with some new rockers
heres my questions the car has been updated to 74 style (hood, fenders, ect..
and a fiberglass front bumper) deffinately not what i want.

How hard is this to reverse and go back to the long hood
and what had to be done to the lock to get this to fit
do you think the front end is still original or has it been hacked to get the 74 stuff to fit

I will try to upload some pics

really would apreciate all info
thanks

The front latch panel gets replaced when converting an early car to late car styling. You can replace the panel with an early one but you also need a bit of sheet metal to extend the sides that were trimmed when the late panel was installed.

The other option is use RSR hood latches to secure the long hood and for go the early latch panel.

If you have difficultly in locating early fenders at a reasonable price you can make do by getting a rusted pair as donors for the turn signal boxes that can be cut off and welded to the late fenders to convert them.

I think that the front latch panel is the biggest job. If you poke your head inside you should be able to tell how it was converted the first time (ie. at the seam or spliced in).

Thanks bobboloo
so if i keep the front latch panel and put the long hood on will the early bumpers
or RS bumper work.

What do you think this car is worth?
is has not run for 3 years needs rockers bad!
motor and tranny should be okay

On the fan housing it says that its a 163.9 cu.in i think so a 2.7 but it has mechanical fuel injection
what motor could this be?
is this car worth messing with

Where are you located in Canada? I am finishing up a 69 911 T restoration north of Vancouver. How much it is worth depends on if you are doing the work yourself and what you plan to do. If you need rockers, you will most likely need inner and outer and you may as well replace the jack receiver tubes and supports while you are in there (price it at Restoration Design, that is where I got most of my sheet metal and they fit great!) It will need paint...this is at least 40-60 hours in a body shop. If you need engine work done, you could budget anywhere from a few hundred tuning it to 4-8000$ Canadian. If you really want an early car, I would look for one, you will need to get alot of welding done to convert it back. I would not pay more than $5000 for the car, but that is just in my opinion.

Get as many numbers as possible off the engine and MFI. Check and see that the tranny is original and if not, what type it now has. Still have early rear bumper with the duck?

Are the late model panels nice enough to resale?

Value? Will the engine turn over? Have you tried a compression or leak down (realizing after not running for this long they will be artificially low...use this to your advantage) Have the oil changed and see if she'll fire. Find out what the drivetrain is like/type. How bad are the brakes, did it sit outside the whole time? Is anything in the interior worth using?

Non running, non original engine, sat for three years, ratty interior, no paint, cookie cutters, non original body work, corroded brakes: I'd offer $4500. If your in love I'd go higher, but I'd start about there. If he hasn't driven it for three years, he's not in love with it.

I paid about $4500 for a roller with new Koni's, uprated bushings and TB's, glossy one season paint job, new brakes, new carpet and BMW buckets, and 15x6 Fuchs about a year ago.

I haven't done this myself but I've seen some late cars that were backdated and they left late latch panel. They had the early S bumper mounted so I know it can be done. I don't know for sure but I would guess that holes still exsist for mounting the bumper brackets. They are located on the panels that the latch panel is welded to so they should have remained.

I myself wouldn't pay more than $3500 US for the above car but that's just me.

I know the early cars are getting harder to find but they are out there if your persistant and patient.

I just sold my 72' Coupe with a fresh rebuilt 2.4T w/ MFI for $6500. New clutch, brakes, good tranny. It wasn't without issues though. It had been hit on the passenger side and repaired improperly so I figure it needed atleast $2500 in panel work to make it right.

I would thoroughly disassemble and clean out the entire fuel system before turning it over. The whole system is contaminated with old fuel (varnish) and will add greatly to your problems, unless systematically removed. I wouldn't want to ingest what's in there into a $500 fuel pump, or injection system.
There's a lot of info available here (search key) to help you along .

Are the rockers rusted out or is it just missing the covers?

I bought a TRE fiberglass hood for my project which has the hood latch to fit the short hood latch panel. Call Dave at TRE Motorsports. The hood is pretty slick, but allows you to keep the later bulkhead without moving it. My car is being backdated, but was previously updated. So it is actually a 71 with a later style hood latch panel.

thanks for the replys. Huge help.
This cant be said enough but pelican is an awsome place.

I dont know how to quote so i will try to answer some questions

dgagne- I live in tremblant , quebec pretty similar to whistler, bc but the ski hill is a third the size. As for the work it will be my brother and I doing all the work would much rather pay someone but funds dont allow that right now, should be fun also
For the drivetrain i was told it ran strong a little puff of oil on start up and thats it and it didnt burn any oil. Could be a load a c$#% who knows i hope he is telling the truth .
