Center console delete, can I cut these wires?

You also need to remove something from inside the cabin. The stuff in the smugglers box is attached to the "firewall". I have a diagram somewhere from the PET page for that stuff. I stopped just short of where you are in pulling my AC. I plan to get in there some night and get that core out as well. I will be putting my fan back in though as it provides fresh air ventilation. I am considering ditching my console and moving the fan switch up to the dash next to my lighter.

Just got wind of this thread. A quick question:
My center console in my 88 carrera has the buttons for the rear window defroster as well as the hazard lights. I'd like to do the console delete, but how does one handle the repositioning of these two items?

adamred - IMHO cutting that hose would not be a problem. If someone wants the a/c, replacing that one hose is cheaper than the evaporator. It will save you alot of struggling with the fitting. You might be able to find where the rubber hose leads to underneath and cut it with a sharp razor rather than fooling with a dremel in that small space.

Jerry, I found 2 hold down metal straps that seem to hold the evaporator in place, are there more hidden connectors?

FYI, I finally was able to actually remove the wiring loom last night, and also the center console itself. I'll take some pics this weekend of the components, everything seems to be in decent shape, probably 3-4 lbs worth of stuff....

David not sure the answer to your question, you might have to fabricate something to fasten those controls to the lower part of the dash? The controls themselves on my SC slipped out through a hole in the bottom of the console, I've just been struggling trying to get the whole loom out...

VERY IMPORTANT, as Hetmann noted above, be sure to remove the electronic connector plate in the firewall in the passenger side floor well - FIRST.

That piece is connected to the blower unit in the smugglers box. Then you you'll be able to slip the blower right out.

After its out, you'll find two holes at the bottom of the smugglers box - exposed to the outside. You can plug those up w/ rubber stoppers from Home Depot.

As you u proceed to disconnect the miles of A/C hose - the screws and hose brackets you remove from under the chassis - should be plugged up as well. I bought some rubber washers and used new non-corrosive screws.

There's one hose that's a ***** - it goes from the A/C receiver located in the front left wheel well - up underneath the metal pan that hides the fuel pump and tie rod boots. Just cut that hose and yank it out. It'll be much easier- than having to remove the metal pan.

A complete A/C delete is a crappy project - but well worth it!

Thanks Maurice! I'm going to start tackling the next phase this weekend. I unplugged the wiring from the plate in the footwell, I'll go back in and actually remove the plate itself.

The connection that is giving me the worse headache right now connects the evaporator to a hose that runs under the chasis, I assume this is what you're referring to, I'm just going to cut it.
