Center console delete, can I cut these wires?
A/C is removed from the car and not coming back, can I simply cut these wires behind the knobs? The hole at the bottom of the console is not big enought to slide the piece out as a unit...
Will I do other electrical damage by just snipping the wires... ![]() And for anyone considering the delete, here's what is under mine, nice clean carpet. ![]() Thanks all, my first steps in lightening this baby up....

I think you can just disconnect the other side of the wiring and pull the wiring out, at least for the fan switch. The a/c temp control has that white capillary tube that runs forward to the evaporator. I'll have to go take a look at my car just to make sure. If you are trashing the parts I could use them.

cut and tape won't hurt anything, as they're just for the A/C. you could also remove the whole loom. the flex tube is filled with stinky gas, so best to leave it intact. it just pushes into the evaporator in the smuggler's box.

Remove the dials, and the connectors will slide out from the console. And you can cut the wires if you like.

Thanks guys....I'm back on pacing the house with my 6 week old duty....will finish the project tomorrow....5 spped let me know what you need, I'll take some pics when its all out tomorrow.

Couple more questions with pics
OK, back to the project. When I pulled the carpet up, I see that the fan wiring splits, one half goes through the firewall into the, the other splits and connects with this....what is it and is there a specific way to unplug it?
![]() Here's the inside of the smugglers box, you can see the hole where I pulled out the flexible tube from the evaporator, what else should I be disconnecting from the other half of the above wiring loom? ![]() Finally, in order to get to the switch above, I had to remove this piece of particle board type wood under the carpet, I can't imagine this is a Porsche part, is this just a PO's crappy imitation of a floor board? Is there some sort of legitimate replacement? ![]() Seemingly easy project is taking the mechanical genius forever.... ![]() Thanks for your help. Adam

The connector in the 1st pic just pulls off the item it's plugged in to.The item is the fan resistor pack that controls the fan speed.The plywood foot board is indeed a Porsche part.

Thanks man...wow that floorboard is just cheapo....I rarely sit in the passenger seat, but when I do it sorta pops in and out....

The plug for the fan is the white connector with the red wires. There is also a white capillary tube that goes to a temp sensor in the evaporator. I wish I had pics, but look for a thin white tube. Sent you a pm.

Thanks guys. So actually I decided that since I'm in there and I have never had working A/C in 3 years, I think I'm going to pull it all out. That said, from looking at the smugglers box pic above, can I just pull all this stuff out? Will I damage any other systems in doing so?
Seems like a few screws and those brass hose fittings and it should come out right? And those who need stuff I'm happy to part it out and sell the bits once its all out, got your PMs. I'll take some pics over the weekend and will post here. Just help me out fellars, can I carefully (cause I know the stuff is worth something to you guys, more then me) pull most of this stuff out? Adam

Removing the a/c will not affect any of the cars other systems. Removing the hoses is messy since the hoses have 20 years of dirt trapped around them.
Just a few screws and brass fittings? Sounds simple enough but always turns out to be alot more work. Just take your time and the a/c sound come out fairly easy. Last edited by 5speed; 05-06-2005 at 11:17 AM.. |

Oh I know this is more involed, this has taken 2 nights of 1.5 hours each so far! I have some permanent grease on my fingers and a nice cut on one knuckle...gotta wear gloves tonight, boy the smugglers box edges are sharp....

Sure thing, I appreciate that someone else is following along! Minor project when compared to most but I feel like I'm contributing something to the large tome of knowledge contained here.

OK an update. I had a lengthy business trip so just got back to it last night. I got most of the visible screws and bolts out, but I cannot for the life of me loosen the very large brass fitting on the lower right of the picture above, I soaked it overnight several times with WD-40, do you think that will help?
Any ideas on that? Also what is the part in the back ground of the same picture that looks like it has a rubber bellows? the other end disappears under the condensor. Thanks almost there! Adam

You'll just have to grow gorilla arms to loosen the fitting. I think it is just age and torque keeping it stuck. Just make sure you use two wrenches or you'll bend and break the tube running into the evaporator.
The shaft with the rubber accordian boot is part of the steering. It connects the column to the rack. Last edited by 5speed; 05-12-2005 at 11:26 AM.. |

Thanks 5speed, good thing I didn't take my allen wrench to it!!
I've been using 2 wrenches but man that thing is stuck, we'll see tonight after soaking a little....Would it be the worse thing in the world if I used a dremmel to cut the rubber line below the fitting? I'm not reinstalling A/C in the car at all... Adam
