oh it is normal! k i was just wondering coz i see people when they say they have 18/21;21/26;22/27 doesn't that mean F/R , so i thought front has to be always bigger than the rear as far as sway bars if concern.btw thanks Noah for replying back i just kinda got worried and thought that was the reason why my car handles kinda weird!!

Noah: Thats contradictory to what I find here http://www.pelicanparts.com/techarticles/911_torsion_bars/911_torsion_bars.htm

I'm not an expert on this, but it looks like one of the sources is wrong.

74 clssc: Nice.... I just like those years.

Those numbers are typically mentioned here in reference to torsion bar sizes, not sway bars. The front torsion bars are smaller in diameter than the rears.

are you talking about the sway bar or the torsion bar?

The numbers you just mentioned are torsion bar sizes, I thnik.

The SC's have 19mm Front and 24mm rear from memory. Don't know abou the 77 Carrera.

Others may be able to clarify. Nice car!

Hmmm...those numbers seem a little askew. More like torsion bar #s.

I don't remember what the sway #s are for a '74, but they're nowhere near that high - not even 18.

Anyway, sweet car. Have any shots of the interior? I'm curious about the seats...

Wait a minute now i'm really confused, Noah said thats normal, then Sumotang mentioned he has 19/24mm on his SC. Therefore it either big on the rear / smaller front or vice versa and it doesn't matter? does it have a difference handling wise ? sorry this might sound like a stupid question but i really just have no clue on this matter. thanks guys for entertaining my silly questions. btw-dd74 i think i do have pics of the interior!

Noah is talking about the sway bar. I am talking about the torsion bar. Dont know much about the sway bar but the rear torsion bar is always larger thatn the front torsion bar.

The torsion bar is like a spring in most cars suspension system. As most of the weight is in the rear for a 911 it makes sense to have a stiffer/larger bar.

sumotang- thats what i thought the rear i would think should be bigger, but in my case i don't know what happpen on this particular car why its the other way around,i even used a dial caliper to measure them so i wouldn't sound so dumb when i post this question. And its 18mm rear and 21 front. what should i do now????is it possible that the previous owner put 'em the other way around or replaced the rear w/ the wrong size?thanks

Yes that is the sway bar. I am talking about torsion bars.

Noah said that was normal to have the front larger than the rear.

So yours must be a 911S, huh? Very cool. And bloody fast! I'm not sure the seats are standard - they were one piece starting in '74. Otherwise, the rest of the interior is very nice.

Hmmm...black engine shroud. Anyone know what that means? Does that mean the S engine, or did Porsche throw whatever color shroud they wanted on the engine at that time. I thought they were all green in '74.

Anyway, about the sway bar size, eh...don't worry about that. Worry instead about the bushings and make sure they're good. Next, align it, corner balance it. Then come Fall, take it to Willow Springs Raceway.

P.S.: you'll need a helmet for Willow.

'74 911's came with 16mm swaybars front & rear as standard. The optional bars were 20mm & 18mm, front & rear.

The 911S & Carrera (175HP) had a green fan shroud; the standard (150 HP) 911's shroud was black.

Don't worry. Your sways are fine.

Stiffer SWAY bars in front relative to the rear help to inhibit oversteer which is what Porsche was trying to do

As for TORSION bars, which can not be seen, they will always be smaller in front than the rear.
