MJ,
There is only one kind of foam you want, and that's the high-density kind that is SFI rated. The trouble with the Home-Depot plumbing wrap is that under any kind of impact it compresses and doesn't cushion your helmet against the rollcage at all. Also, that stuff will melt if it catches on fire and drip on unprotected skin, bad outcome. http://www.longacreracing.com/catalog/item.asp?id=1193&catid=21

I was told in no uncertain terms by my friends in the local Porsche club NOT to buy the foam from the hardware store. There is much better stuff made specifically for racing that you will find by doing a search.
I bought SFI rated padding from Summit Racing and it has nice Velcro backing on it to hold it in place. It's more expensive than foam from Home Depot, but it will protect you head much better in a crash. Regards,

Even the race houses will sell you the useless 'nerf bar' padding. Don't get it. Like everyone else says, you should get the SFI rated high-density stuff.

The other option is Longacre padding, which is very similar to SFI but technically not "SFI rated". Just went thru this today.
