Any paint which changes color w/ temp?

Anyone know of a paint or coating which changes color with temperature? Ideally, black at room temp, and red at temps above 125F. Must be able to take high temps.

Brembo has some I think that does something similar, not sure about the heat ranges though.........

Contact a welding supply store. They have temp. indicating paint and crayon.

Also check with Racers Wholesale, Pegasus Racing. Also an industrial supplier like McMaster or Grainger Industrial Supplies.

I think the paints that do this are one-use deals. Once they change, they don't change back.

You could also use temperature-sensitive decals. They have a dot that changes color when you hit a particular temperature.



They're stick-on nonreversible horizontal 4-temp labels with a range of 175 F to 250 F degrees. Packs of ten of them sell for $14 here.

Look for part number 5951K44 for the one pictured, and then click on 'catalog page' to see all your options. They probably also have ones for lower temp ranges.

Excuse the hijack here but I've got a paint story that just happened to me. I bought Stoddard's exhaust paint for early heat exchangers and muffler, took the entire exhaust system off to paint it and it looked great. The original darker grey that's hard to replicate in other ways. After 30 minutes of driving the car it turned an gawd-awful copper color. I called Stoddard and they said they couldn't believe it but they'd look into it. I heard from them a couple days later and they were really embarrassed.
The paint supplier had sold them 200 degree paint instead of the 1500 degree type. 2 or 3 months later I finally got my new paint.
Just finished spraying it on so we'll see if it's the right stuff. Have not driven the car yet.

Is this a cosmetic thing? Or do you want to see temp. changes? If the latter, contact Omega Insturments - their catalog is a gold mine of useful tips and info.

Not cosmetic. I am looking for an automatically reseting high temp indicator.

Or you could connect a thermocouple to the area to be measured (if convenient) and run the wire to a multimeter that has a temp. display function (Fluke and many others).

yes - you may want to use a fine wire T'cpl if the area has heat or solar radiation on it. Post more about the area nd the conditions...

to use a multimeter as a reader you need Type K


Remember -- a thermal sensor tells you the temp. of the Sensor itself -- whether that is the temp. of what you want measured is UP TO YOU
