Ebay Starters ?? Any good?

Hey,

I've been looking at the High Torque starters that pelican sells and I'm just about to order one up. I need to replace mine bad... the car won't start anymore

This evening, I thought I would just do a quick search on Ebay to see if anyone was seling starters and I found this:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=7986085311&category=33576

Anybody here have any experience with these? The price is pretty good. What do you guys think?

Thanks,
~Shayne

They sound good but I have no experience. Would be interested to hear from someone who has one.

I bought one some time ago, as it seemed a cheap alternative to an original unit. When the bosch starter on my coupe stopped working a month ago I mounted the high torque starter. Until now I am very satisfied with the result. Definately an improvement, but that is comparing to an old and tired bosch starter. Very different sound when starting. It remains to be seen how this starter will hold up in the long run

I bought one too. Have been pleased for four weeks, now. It said new on the box, but I did see the fine print saying reman. It does have a year warranty. Saved a lot of weight over the Bosch. Does sound very different when cranking.

so far so good. BTW - I spent $107 shipped. They seemed to have upped their prices. Being in southern CA, I clicked Buy it NOW at 4p. 10a it arrived the following day. Pretty acceptable response, huh??

Great starters. Internals of much higher quality and modern design compared to the tin can Bosch. Had one on the 3.6, cranks over much quicker and a much better sound, FWTW.

I didn't weigh, but there is a SIZEABLE difference in weight. 1/2 is not far off. I know because installing the new one vs. removing the old one was much easier (holding while threading the hardware.

I think it is a good choice!

Just installed one like it on a 3.6 G50 conversion that was previously on pbs911's 78 Targa 3.6 conversion.

Ours had a name brand on it but can't remember it. Paul probably got it from Pelican?

Definitely sounds different. Sounds more "high-tech" than the well known Porsche sound. Works great as far as I can see.

Wouldn't mind having one on my own car. Seems of sturdier construction than the original unit.

Craig,
Weighing the girlfriends is never a good idea; even a visual check can be risky.
As far as the starters are concerned, my bathroom scale says the Bosch weighs 12.5 lb. and the reman hitorque is 10. Not the race winning difference we would like, but might let us rationalize putting off dieting for a couple more weeks.

I don't know, my starter has never suffered trying to crank my motor. When I dropped my motor, I had both my starter AND my alternator rebuilt by a specialist for $125.....

Actually, he's on vacation. I spoke (email) to him on Friday. He told me the reason he pulled his auctions was that he wouldn't be able to ship out any product for the next two weeks while he's away. He apparently will be re-listing his auctions on July 25th.

I ended up buying one of the high torque starters from pelican anyways. With the shipping (to canada), duties and other fees, the one from pelican ended up being only about $100 more. The guy from ebay only ships UPS. So I would of ended up paying big $$ in brokerage fees and duty. Good excuse to buy more stuff from pelican anyways and they ship USPS. Plus, I didn't really want a remanufactured starter. I think it's a small price to pay for a new unit plus if something goes wrong, I’m pretty sure I can rely on pelican to help me out.
