Maybe your "mole" is able to solve the 2 or 4 screw horn grill mystery because I'm confused at the moment.

Oh, and:

Can you please describe, or even better, post photos of:

Starboard inner fender, shock mount, and washer bottle (if there)
Horn grills. Two or four holes?
Solex Carbs
Dash top attachment, are there four pins?
Nadella axles? Or converted to modern Lobro type?
'911" logo on glove box?
Steering wheel butterfly and rim?

These little details are the critical pieces of information, a lot of the serial number changeover points for these items are unknown.

Signed,

owner of 304056 (901/5 engine with Webers, two hole grilles, front mounted washer tank and adjustable strut tops and plenty of Fe203)
Very informative stuff. I have a "1966" 912 that has the 4-hole metal horn grilles, the starboard mounted washer bottle. I even have the original Michelin X spare tire in the trunk! I know it was manufactured in 1965, I'm waiting on the COA from Porsche North America.

You guys have me hating myself. Was based in Berlin years ago and almost bought a late '64, early '65 911 that was sitting in the back of a sales yard. No one wanted it but I had no room for it and just could not hack a second car.

Oh well, maybe later on in life!

Yes, it appears that a lot of '66's have the four-screw grilles. According to Dr. Johnson p. 20, the first one with two-screw grilles was 303468. Semjon, it seems that your car, 302831, sets the new record for being the earliest car with two-screw grilles.

A few photos from the Parade just for fun.

Immaculate '66 912 from Ontario.

'66 912 with many '65 touches, owner claimed it was '66.

Well, I'll throw a little more data into the mix. My C of A lists my chassis number, 302981, as being a 66 model year, built on Nov. 24, 1965. The original color was Aga Blue (it's 1972? Carrera Yellow right now). The fenders, which I believe are original, have the mounting tabs for the 4 screw horn grills, but the car has 2 hole grills installed (obvious replacements). The lower dash pad wraps aroung the dash corners, the wood trim has a metal mounting plate, and the steering wheel has the butterfly horn button.

It's interesting how 3 or 4 of us have cars that old to be so close together VIN wise. Ron, my car is built like yours. Was your build date on your COA ? My 933 must have been built a few days before. Welcome to the board!

Hmm, really starting to doubt the fact that my fenders are original.

How is it possible then that my car 302831 which is older then 302981 is build in December '65 according to my COA

Rick, nice car BTW. Would love to see more pictures

You listed the date on your COA as 11/12/1965. If it is the American way of listing dates, that would be November 12, which would make sense in the order of things. My COA is printed:
11/24/1965

Semjon, I hate to say it, but it sounds like your fenders might have been replaced. Have you, or someone qualified, inspected the car for previous damage?

Oh boy... how stupid can I get. You are absolutely right!
I just checked the copy from the factory build book and it states November 12.
Never noticed that before. The dates look very much alike

Sorry for the confusion!
I'm going to sit in my corner for a while a feel ashamed, very ashamed

About my fenders, no need to feel sorry.
I also get the feeling the are replaced but when I bought the car it was in need of a total resto. No accident repairs just rust, rust and more rust.
The fenders appeared to be total stock, same color, no repaint.
So that's the confusing bit... too bad the fenders aren't stamped with a (partial) VIN

You can come out of the corner now.......
Is your restoration completed? In either case, you can have the corner pieces made, and go with the 4 hole horn grills. All will be well.

I got so excited with my new puchase, that I forgot about one of my lost children.....2 years ago I bought a 65 race car that ran alot of SCCA races in the midwest in the 70's. It's been sitting ever since. This car is way on the back burner. The VIN is 30217
