This is a great thread. One question naturally comes to mind: How much would you guys say that a 3.6 conversion typically runs? Say for a 94 motor. Do you think that it would be worth it to buy a ready motor from a place like Instant-G?

My experience was that taking my 3.2, having a complete rebuild, taking it to 3.4 with new pistons and sleeves, cams, head work, extrude
honed intakes, bored throttle body, clutch, etc., etc. was going to cost about $14,000. This is not too far away from doing a conversion. It will cost a few thou more but the gains in H.P. [and still being legal] are flat
friggin' AWESOME! Do a 3.6 conversion. Save a little longer, if you have to.
Good luck!

With the 3.6 engine you will be getting a newer style and model of fuel injection system, and that helps. You also will get more hp and torque.

Downsides are that you will lose the engine mounted oil cooler, and that will mean that you need to add one somewhere on the car, which is usually done on the nose but have seen additional ones stuck in the opposite front fender.

Its 6 one way and half a dozen the other. Personally I would rather have a engine build by the little elves in Germany than one put together here. Do a search on 3.6 conversions and you will find that Timmins is not the only one doing them. Some of us prefer to have others do the work if you know what I mean. You do not say where you live on your profile and if its not anywhere near Rhode Island, where ST lives, then I would strongly recommend that you look into other alternatives.

All in all it really provides a kick in the rear in the car.

Why do you lose the engine mounted cooler ??? Does not fit ?
Who are "the little elves in Germany "???

Lukesportsman 09-11-2005 03:47 PM

3.6 Doesn't have one.

Elves = Porsche assembly workers

Joeaksa 09-11-2005 08:19 PM

You lose the engine oil cooler to place a mounting pad for a power steering pump on the newer cars. As we do not have power steering, we put a cover over it.

The little elves are the ones who work for the factory and live, eat and sleep 911 engines.

Thanks for the comments... It took a long time to get here...
Basically the whole car was upgraded. So between coordinating the parts, the bodyshop and the mechanical upgrades 6 months went by.
This is my daily driver so I decided against installing a roll cage.

I am still trying to fix some little annoying problems but it should all be wrapped up by the end of this week.

If I had to do it again I'd call Porsche Doc (or TRE motorsport or Rennsport systems) and commission a car to my specs...

Is it worth it? To me yes, I love the idea of having a unique car that was put together for you. This is also the reason I went for the 934 front bumper/splitter... less common. I must say that I am having second thoughts... even though it is growing on me.

If you have any other questions fire away... I'll be happy to help you any way I can....

Cool thread ;)

If I ever did up another HP-Junky Hybrid, I'd start with a 3.6 transplant, slip in some custom forged JE Turbo Pistons and twin turbo the sucker using a pair of Garrett Ball Bearing units ;)

No harm in dreaming :D

911teo 09-13-2005 04:30 AM

I thought about turbocharging the 3.6 varioram... It is easier and cheaper to get a 993TT engine... they go for around 22-25k. 408hp at the flywheel stock. Easy 650hp.... on a 2,400lbs 911... :)

stv951 09-13-2005 09:10 PM

Anyone knows of an early 911 with a 993 TT engine ? I guess that wold require a G50 conversion, as I doubt a 915 would be strond enough. This would be close to CTR teritory.

Jack Olsen 09-13-2005 09:27 PM

Henry Watts has a 1972 with a built 993TT motor in it. It is very fast. I assume he's got a G50, but I'm not sure.

Garrett 09-13-2005 09:55 PM

It's interesting how many Targa's end up with 3.6's!!!

Neat cars, guys! :)

WydRyd 09-14-2005 01:40 AM

You can run 0.45bar boost (twin turbos) on a stock 993 Varioram engine for 410HP at the flywheel. It's all in the reprogramming of the engine management system and efficient intercooling ;)

Henry's super fast 911 also has the 993 rear suspension as well.
A G50 with big power would be best but the cost to build a G50 race trans is much greater than the 915. Then again if you are into it that deep (G50/993TT conversion) some gears for a G50 should be no big deal. :)
