how do the 993 suspension geometry and the 935 set up differ? Why (if it is) is the 993 so much better? |
The 993 rear end is a whole different animal. It's a modern, multi-link design as opposed to the old semi trailing arm setup. Once it's stiffened up, there's no beating it. Of course, it's very expensive to put into an earlier car.

3.6 Conversion, what exhaust used
I am in the process of swapping motors on my 1985 Cab 911, with a 1997 Varioram, and have been having problems figuring out what exhaust system to use, I was told that the headers from the 993 motors are the best available and i want to use them, and find an exhaust muffler system that will allow usage of the 993 headers and catalytic converters, however with different mufflers since I was told that the 993 muffler set up would not work......What did all of the people here do on exhaust, I have a C4 turbo body upgrade on a 1985 chassis.....Any help with companies that have a muffler set up....I tried B&B to no avail...

How would you guys compare the power of an early 3.6 911 against a 996 ? Power to weight favours the early car

This is true at lower speeds, but realize the large aerodynamic benefit of the 996 once you get into triple digit speeds.
On the street, my ~2600lb ~300hp 1977 911 feels more potent & zippy than a 3.4 996, imho. |
An early car with a 3.6 is faster than a 996 on a track. But as 996 prices come down, the cost advantage may end up with the newer car.

996 are actully a very good underappreciated car, sort of like a 964. But the engines have a lot to prove before they convert any one to their worthiness as as successor to the 911 line.
GT3s on the other hand are to die for. |
Stock 993 is a very good suspension design, but it is not inexpensive to change the rubber pieces to harder more track oriented versions, or monoballs.

Forgot to add that the one thing that cannot be transplanted from a 993 to a 911 is chassis rigidity, those things are rocks, even w/o a cage.
I'm sure that a full cage tied into all the suspension areas would be as good or better. |

Henry Watts' car is probably the ultimate early car with a swap. In addition to a built 993TT motor, he's got a 993 rear end, a G50 (probably with custom gear sets) and a lot of the Smart Racing catalog thrown in for good measure. Plus, he wrote the book Secrets of Solo Racing, so he's no slouch behind the wheel. I usually qualify right behind him in the race series I occasionally run in, but that doesn't mean our lap times are even close. He's 10 full seconds a lap faster than me at Thunderhill, for example. Here's a snapshot from a race start, which shows how quickly he's able to outdistance me in a straight line. 3.6L 964 engine
Intake system: SDS EFI with Jenvey individual throttle bodies. Custom machined throttle linkage. Engine internal: Ti valve springs, webcam camshafts. Exhaust is custom built, using chopped-off Burch 42mm headers, and a magneflow 2in-2out exhaust (it's loud, so I block-off one outlet on the road, like Jack Olsen does). |
