Can you avoid being stranded?

OK, assume moderate mechanical abilities. What are the likely causes of a breakdown on the road that with a few spares and some critical tools we can get back home.

I figure electrical issues are most likely, and possibly some air leak problems.

Anyone want to share their experience and preparedness?

Wear or bring good boots in case you need to walk or push the car.

I'd think a well maintained daily driver would be the best insurance against breakdown. Then with an extra 1 or 2 k miles on the road shouldn't be too much of a stretch. JMO...

American Automobile Association (AAA).....or any good road service provides a nice bit of insurance...

that along with a good basic tool kit, spare fuses, spare relays, fix a flat & some duct tape......

and of course a cell phone.....

I've been stranded by me '73.5 2 or 3 times....Always electrical. Once a battery postive postive post contacted ground and shorted things out. The next time it was a charging problem.....I have a great tool kit.
AAA card and cell phone......

there are local rides where a flat bed will suffice and big rides where a tow is $500.

A spare alternator, fuel pump, ignition, and tools isn't a bad idea

CD box, relays, fuses, and a test light. Battery jumper box and a cell phone for good luck...
