Geez, how hard can it be to find a 993
The Porsche bug has bitten again. Sold the 3.6 Black Bird and now I want a 993. . .
Why is every 993 for sale a cab, or manual? All I want is a silver on black coup, tip auto, 96-98 low to mid miles at a reasonable price. Is that so hard!!!!

Good luck in the search, Paul.

Picked up my wifes just about a year ago. The PO lived about 3 miles away. It had 66K miles and we picked it up for $25.5. it's a tip (would have preferred manual) but there was no way we were gonna pass it up. All in all a great looking, great running car.

pbs911,
Do you really want a Tip, I drove a few around O.C. and was really disappointed in the way they drove. Michael

Michael, I want a Tip for the simple reason I live where traffic congestion just kills the joy of driving a manual. Being able to drive the car is what's important, not dreading to drive the car.

One thing on the Tip. For me personally I'd prefer a manual as I said. However, when I drive the wifes car I always put it in the manual select mode and shift with a switch on the wheel. The car is still a blast to drive and I don't find the Tip all that offensive....

I don't know that I would want a tip in a 993 but the 5 spd tip in my old S4 and the 6 spd tip in my new S4 are perfect for everyday use.

A friend just sold a very nice 96 993 tip w/aero kit, 50k miles, red/black. Was initially asking 36k, not sure what he got for it. Only issue with it was that the CEL light would come on occassionally due to the exhaust port problem, which his mechanic said they see more often with the tip cars, and which is a very expensive fix. Evidently it's not a problem with the 95's. He just had the light reset, but was told as the problem got worse the light would come on more often and it would then have to be fixed. The car always ran fine, even when the light came on, but it would not pass emmissions with the light on.

There's a red '95 993C4 w/manual transmission and 36,000 miles in Boston that's been listed on Rennlist and other sites for over 6 months now at 35.5K. The ad just got bumped on Rennlist so I assume it is still available. It seems that the '95's are creeping into the upper 20's in order to move, even with low miles.

Funny market. I've been casually shopping/learning about 993s for a few months.
The dealer sites list 993s for silly money--mid-to-high $30s for average cars. I wonder if anyone actually pays that? I guess with Porsches there's always the non-enthusiast impulse buyer who's easy prey. Ebay is almost worthless, the way people abuse the Reserve concept. I see the same cars make half a dozen appearances on Ebay, get bid up to a fair price (or shilled up higher) every time just to end up "Reserve Not Met". Then you see the private party cars, who's owners acutally want to sell them in a reasonable time frame. That's where the reality check comes in and you see what these cars are really worth. Edit: the CEL issue is a HUGE problem. If you live in a state that does OBD-II emissions testing, you simply must not buy a '96-'98 car without proof that the issue has been resolved--with a top-end rebuild and new valve guides if you're paranoid, or one of the other clean out methods if you like living close to the edge. Otherwise knock $5k right off the top. Sellers may ***** and moan and say it's not a real problem, but this is a very big deal that you can't afford to ignore. This is just another reason why I think the '95's should hold their value better than the '96-'98's.
The three biggest concerns people seem to have about 993's are the following: Worn valve guides Immobilizer/Drive Block malfunctions ODB II/CEL issues The valve guide issue is totally hit or miss. I'd say it's important to look at service history and location (hot climates) as well as the presence of the engine tray. There is no definitive answer to valve guide wear (as best I can tell) But, I would say it is no less a problem on 964's or 3.2's ... or like snapped head studs on SC's or pulled studs on 2.7's... All you can do is take the evidence you have and make an educated guess. The Immobilizer/Drive Block can be a pain in the arse. It can lead to many hours of expensive diagnostic work by a dealer. If it malfunctions, the car will not work and new units are $$$$$$. So, shop for an early build 993 (like mine) that did not have an immobilizer. 95's also hold the better hand with the CEL issue. OBD I does not recognize the error from blocked passages and doesn't store an error that will fail you in those pesky smog states. So, BUY an early '95 and save yourself some headache. ![]()
