Did you check the Black/Violet wire at the back of the tach for pulses from the CDI 'TD' output terminal with an oscilloscope or CMOS logic probe?

The Black/Violet wire has to go through the 14-pin connector at the engine electrical [relay/fuse/CDI] panel ... a common problem area where corrosion can be found. Cleaning of the 14-pin connectors should be done very, very carefully, as the terminals are silver-plated brass ... no abrasives! Q-tips with 9% pickling vinegar, isopropyl alcohol ... are safe, followed by rinse with distilled water and air drying.
