73S: Matching chassis to engine numbers?

Hi - Could anyone please tell me if the following chassis and engine numbers were originally delivered on the same car, 73S:

9113300870 6331154

Also, if available, it'd be a bonus to recieve the proper gearbox number too...

Many Thanks!

GrantG, just so you understand...

The information from the Red Book tells you that the chassis and engine numbers you posted are both from a 1973 "S" model, but not that they are "matched" to the same car. In order to tell exactly what engine matches the chassis posted you will have to get that directly from Porsche.

Oh, ok. I thought there was some info other than Cardex available. Thanks for clarifying that...

John,
Thanks for clarifying that. I looked at my "Certificate of Authenticity'. It states the engine serial number, but has "not recorded" for the trans.

No Problem. As I saw this thread develop I said to myself, "OK, they are both understanding each other but they are not on the same page". Funny.

My CoA also provides the transmission number. John C., I'm glad you posted as I was wondering if there wasn't a disconnect there, too.

I have the pocket Tech-Spec books and they usually give a "range" of numbers for both the engine and chassis.

As a point of interest, I have official documentation to match the specific engine and chassis of my 85 Carrera. To see how the spec books match... I noticed the build date of my car ( Feb) and "assumed" roughly 1/5 or 1/4 of the way through the number range for both the engine and number ranges shown. Made for a nice double-check ( but not an EXACT double check) on the official number I have from my build sheet and from Porsche.

Maybe the Tech-Spec engine / chassis ranges can be a rough "guide" if what you have... at least makes sense from this perspective.

As John pointed out the only way to tell for sure if they "match" is to get the COA from PCNA. Looking at the serial numbers you posted more than likely they probably are a matched set.

Since your car has the serial number of 911330(0870) it was approx. the 870th S coupe to roll off the line in 73'. There was a total of 1430 S coupes and 925 S targas built in 73'. There was no differentiation between coupe and targa motor serial numbers. If the car had a sporto tranny then it recieved a number that designated that it matched a sporto.

There were 2231 S motors made in 73' and 136 S sporto motors made in 73'.

If your car had been made early in the production year then the motor and cars serial number would be close in sequential numbers.

Example: Car 9113300001 (first S coupe of 73') could very likely have motor number 6330001 (first S motor of 73') but motor number 6330001 could have just as easily gone in a S Targa. As the production year went on the motors' serial numbers got farther away from the cars' serial number.

Considering your cars sequential number is 0870 and the motor is 1154 they very likely match. If the motor number had been 0870 or less it very likely wouldn't be a match. Also if the motor sequential number was close to the end of production say 2231 then it also probably would not be correct.

Your tranny should be type number is probably 915/02 (5-speed). It would be 915/12 if it's a 4-speed.

According to the latest early S registry list I have the following chassis and engines are listed together (note: these combinations might not all be matiching #'s):

9113300854----6631315

9113300861----6631329

9113300902----6631421

6631126----9113300720

6631164----9113300752

6631169----9113300755

6631174----9113300756

6631184----9113300759

6631161----9113300774

These #'s cast a little doubt on 870 matching with 1154 but strange things happened sometimes when these cars were built so you should get a CoA to know for sure.
