question about cv joint.

Took a drive to the grocery store this morning and on the way home I heard a noise similar to wobbling. The speed of the noise changed with the speed I was driving and would stop when I stopped. When I got out of the car I smelled an acrid type smell or hot smell coming from the rear of the car. Am wondering if a CV joint would make this noise, and if the boot is torn (which it is) could the hot smell be the bearings failing from lack of grease or dirt?

Thanks

Kelly,

Before you drive it again get under and check all the CV bolts for tight. What you may smell and hear is a CV coming loose and grease getting on an exhaust.

Once you ate convinced the CV bolts are tight (a safety issue) see if one wheel hub is hot or warmer than the other. If so, that may indicate a wheel bearing failure.

Was there any change if you applied the parking brake slightly?

When the brakes are off, are the rear wheels free to rotate?

Best,
Grady

Thanks for reply. Checked CV bolts all seemed tight. Both boots toward the tires are torn and I'm thinking dirt or water is in there tearing up the bearings.

Both rear wheels are free to rotate.

Will check later for difference in wheel hub temps.
