It would have meant spending more time on the frame (more $$$). Plus the 74 was a non sunroof tub. So getting the sunroof out of my 88 was a wash with the mods needed on the 74 to fit the G50. Plus starting with a bare tub makes the repaint process easier and nicer... It will be Mexico blue... |

Having said that I will ask Steve Timmins... He's been great thoughout this all project.... I am sure he won't mind elaborate on it... |
Awesome stuff! I am just aching to get started with my build now, waiting for parts to show up and we are going with the Jenvey as well, gosh they look nice.
On your efi I believe your using a motec box but are you going to also go crankreferenced and coil on plug by chance? |
Matteo- If youre still looking for a G50 5speed or 6 speed
check youre PM. |
lol..after it's built, don't add up the receipts..hide them away, especially from the wife. ;) wy wallet shuddered all the way from arkansas..lol.

Hey Man!
Very NICE  I think I'll go crash my Porsche, So I can do this to my car. :D How bad did you say to your insurance man your neck hurt? ;) I am looking foward to seeing the chassis dyno numbers on this one. What is your guess Man? SmileWavy |
Don
about the dyno numbers... I don't know... Put it this way... a while back there was a thread on the engine forum about a 3.6 with carbs and EFI. It was putting down 291 rwhp. Assuming 15% loss it's 343HP at the flywheels. Extrapolating to 3.9L it gives 371HP. My cams are a little more aggressive, I have bigger valves, bigger TBs, ported heads... I don't know... but suddenly GT3 power does not seem so silly anymore :D Whatever it is if we hit the 2.300 lbs I will be in the 6lb per HP area... |

I see using your using Johns dc22's it ought to breath good with those. Whats the CR of those JE's 12.5 ish? It won't surprise me to see 400 rwhp and a bunch of torque. I see a G50/50 or something in your further Too! It looks great Man! SmileWavy |
This is one kick A$$ combo!! I too am intersted in what it will make. That is going to be one unbeivalble car when you are done!! Ask John what he thinks the power is going to be. I nearly fell of my chair when he told me last week what guys were making with the cams I ordered with only a 3.4!
I think you will see at least 400 at the flywheel with snappy thottle response. You will have a dream motor, tons of power and torque, pku the great throttle response ( from the itb's) that some of the early MFI motors had. The best of both worlds. It will be the motor the rest of us talk about and dream about. Cheers |
so, too, the idea is it will be a high revving motor? with all the beautiful sounds that go along with that? you ought to hang earplugs from the rearview mirror, just to make a point..lol :)

Are you interested in adopting anyone? I can grovel for rides in this puppy!

Awesome project!! I also want to say "Damn you!!" I have been perfectly happy with my 3.6 swapped Targa. I have, in the back of my mind, toyed with adding a Motec to the mix just to simplify the ignition system. I am not too happy with the dual distributors and would prefer a couple of banks of coil packs instead.
Your project is amazing, and potentially getting 400 to the wheels from a naturally aspirated engine is too good for words. What model Motec are you using? I have an M-4 in my RX-7 and love it. You are probably dealing with Jay at Motec right? He is a great guy. Good luck with your project. Keep up updated. This is awesome. |
I have a Motec M600 unit.
The options installed are the extra 512k of memory, the single Wide band Lambda controller. The tricky thing about Motec (and I guess all the other EFI systems) is that it's not over with the ECU... You need to add some more $$$ for the harness and dyno tuning and in car tuning... Steve Timmins and Paul Schwartz (@ Cyntex - Motec authorized dealer) will tune the engine. I have been dealing mostly with them. I bought the ECU from a fellow Pelican that decided to go a different route on his project. As per the 400 HP to the wheels.... I guess you guys are getting over excited.. That would be around 470HP at the flywheel... or 120hp/litre. I don't think so... The 3.8 (really a 3,749cc) in RSR form from Motorsports was good for 450hp at the flywheel... And it was not a streetable engine... No, I think I will be happy with 380-390hp at the flywheel. 100hp/litre on a street 2-valve aircooled engine will be an incredible result. Anything above that will be icing on the cake. To be honest max HP was never one of the priorities. I wanted a rev happy engine with instant throttle response. With the money I am spending I could have twin turboed the 3.6 and easily obtained 650hp with the Motec... But I'll leave that for another day! |
The initial cost of the Motec unit is the tip of the iceberg. I think I spent the cost over the unit once over in add ons for my RX-7 and it is a very simply 2 cylinder setup. The lambda is a most do and VERY valuable when street tuning. I still use mine from time to time just to see how everything is doing.
It sounds liek you are in good hands. I had to fly a guy in from Texas to tune my car properly. I was lucky enough to get a base map from a guy in Merrietta Ga who owns a Mazda shop and had been tuned by the same Texas tuner. But, tuning is 1/2 the fun of it. Especially once you unstrap it off the dyno and get it on the street and get into it. I love the route you are going and will enjoy watching your project as it progresses. |
FWIW I am building a similar motor for my car. I am goign nearly the same route but will be using larger TMW stacks (which I happened to trip over, darn) and some DC100 cams, again from Dougerty. The consensus is that it won't idle all that well, and most of the eggs will get broken on the way back from the grocery store, but it should be pretty happy above 6K. I'm using DTA management mainlky because I happened to have a setup sitting around.

Little update...
The 935 ERP suspension kit parts have arrived... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1140987655.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1140987682.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1140987700.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1140987716.jpg Aaron and Keith at Zuffenhaus will work this coming week onto the 74 tub. On the agenda are: - Smart Racing front suspension towers - SM front camber plates - front strut towers reinforcement (triangle bars welded between the towers) - rear shock towers reinforcemet - Rear "S" flares removal and installation of my "old" early style flares - tunnel modification for the G50/31 transmission. Yeah I decided that I may as well go for it... So the G50/31 is coming new from Germany... Here are the 2 tubs one beside the other at Zuffenhaus http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1140987947.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1140987965.jpg Work should go smooth... especially after the team has acquired 2 new eager helpers! :) http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1140988023.jpg |
All I know is that stuff could be set on the mantle and admired for years..........like fine collectables!!
|
Wooohooo!!!! Congrats on great project Matteo! Therefore, I have a question for you: what needs to be done to fit 6sp G50 into 74 tub? I keep thinking about similar upgrade on my car. So, any details that you could provide on that conversion would be greatly appreciated!
|
Keith and Aaron at Zuffenhaus are the expert. I know th G50 is longer and wider. U need to modify th eTbar housing and modify the tunnel.
I'll ask them to chime in for more precise infos... |

P.S.: it seems like in the end, you wouldn't have to adjust to a different exterior color! :D |
What is different/better about the 935 suspension?
What does it allow you to do? |
this is awesome ! I know the feeling, keep the faith !
|
Matteo,
very nice project. It seems like money for sure isn't an issue or a limiting factor in this built. What is the entire budget you have planned for this? Just adding up a fully built 3.9 engine with MOTEC, massive tub mods, full 935 suspension, paint, new donor tub, etc. I am wondering if you could almost buy a 997 cup car outright instead.... Keep us posted with lots of pictures on progress. Cheers, Ingo |

As per the advantages the main benefit is adjustability. Camber, caster, track width can be easily set. Also you get rid of the cross member as the ERP has its own. The arms are longer and the pivo point is raised to improve camber and reduce anti-dive tendencies under braking. Will I take full advantage of this? I doubt it.. at least initially... But it's there and I can only get better. These are a couple of pics to see how it will looke when installed From the Rennspeed website http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1141044868.jpg And on the car from autometrics http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1141045036.jpg |
Matteo, What an awesome car! When do project completion on this?

I would say that the car with the old 3.6 could be ready by the 3rd week of March... The 3.9 engine will take a little longer... I certainly hope to have it all done by Easter |
We'll have to schedule a "Spring Run" for this monster. Looking forward to seeing it in person.

I don't know about a 997 cup, but certainly I am in 996 GT3 territory. But the way I see it is that since I am not a pro this has to be first of all FUN. I know I could have bought a faster, more powerful, newer car for less money... But my car will be something special.. something different, almost unique. I will have decided every details of it... It was not meant to go this far.. I just wanted to fix mine after the crash and get it back on the road asap.... When I learnt that it would take a while to fix the tub I thought abt "upgrading" the 3.6... I had some time and some spare cash... And the rest is history... :o A little better here, a little cooler there, no budget and I ended up with this. Sometimes I wonder if I went a little too far. In the quest of making this the ultimate fun 911 I might have created a "monster" and messed up the "balance". it takes more than a hugely powerful engine and light chassis to make a good car. We'll see... |
Jon
anytime... I'd love to have a spin on yours too... |
The ultimate "as long as I'm in there" 911!!
Porsches: should be on the governments "controlled substances" list!!! |
the ultimate 911 is the one you own IMHO. Matteo, your car is unique !

You do have to get coil overs in the front though, but you already talked about that with the spring perches and all. Are you doing coil springs in the back? Does the ERP stuff do the same thing in the rear? What the heck does ERP stand for? Thanks for humoring my questions. |
ERP is Eisenlohr Racing Products (sp). The fronts are remarkably abjustable, I run it on my car too. You have all the regular adjustments at the top of the strut (even moe if you get plates like Matteo is using) plus you can adjust caster and camber/track width under the car in a matter of minutes or seconds if you are fast!! :) The stuff is substantially lighter as well. ( thom and randy's database has the weights)
The rear allows you to adjust the toe by lengthening the plate with the big adjuster at the pivot point, very easy. It also adjusts idependant of camber. Once again, this only takes seconds as you don't loosen the rear bolts that mount the spring plate to the trailing arm. I *think* Matteo is using camber boxes for the trailing arm pickups, and this is the ultimate set up as it allows you to adjust camber from inside the car (rear seat area). I don't have the rear pivot boxes (yet) but would sure like them! Matteo will have the ultimate (IMHO) :) suspension set up depending on what he does for sway bars. It will have a HUGE range of adjustment (think 3 times what a stock set up has), be very compliant, with absolutely no movement due to rubber pieces. The only rubber in this setup is in the tires. Nice choices on the products my friend! I love it! :) Cheers |
Thanks Jeff
|
Incredible project. Will you still be taking it to the track? You haven't left anything to improve if you wreck it again!
|
What is the piece that parrallels the struts and comes down to the a arm? That isn't in the picture of the suspension.
