3.9 RSR project --- my Carrera reborn
A couple of months ago I wrecked my 911 for a mix of stupidity and bad luck.
It was very sad because it took me a long time to get the car how I wanted it.... But I saw it as an opportunity to go a step fwd... This is the car as it was (still is) after the crash... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1136842028.jpg So after fixing the bodywork we'll do the following upgrades: - 935 front suspension erp kit - 935 rear coil overs conversion - Smart Racing Product front strut box + camber plate - front and rear adj Fox shocks - Fabcar dual master cylinder kit - sunroof delete - fuel racing cell As the car will be in the shop for a while i decided to upgrade the engine a little too... This is what is being done to it: - 3.9L CMW P&C - Bore case to 109mm - new head gaskets - ARP rod bolts - solid rockers - Valve job (regrind intake and exhaust seats) - new valve guides - CMW 52mm in valves - CMW 43mm ex valves - CMW Chromolly drilled retainers - CNC port heads to 45mm - Jenvey 51mm tapered to 45mm Individual Throttle Bodies - Jenvey horns, fuel rail, linkage etc - DC62 Dougherty Racing cams - Motec M600 ECU The idea was to have a fun, happy revving engine with a decent torque and a good throttle response... The 3.9L capacity should provide for a nice torque base... and the ITBs, Motec and cams should make it fun above 5,000 rpm. The goal is to get 400HP at the flywheel. All the components have been ordered... Will get pictures as they arrive and as the re-build progresses. |
Congratulations! That will be a SWEET package! Any current photos of the car?
Another fine example of...."every cloud has a silver lining" Best regards, Doug |
So whilst the engine is being built (more details soon) the car is getting fixed.
The guys at Zuffenhaus dropped the engine and the transmission and now the frame is getting straighten. I went to the body shop today and took some pictures... It is amazing what they can do... http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1137107018.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1137107052.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1137107081.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1137107105.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1137107128.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1137107143.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1137107169.jpg The major damage was/is on the driver side rear suspension (the front suspension is all shot but I'll replace everything anyway). Basically there is a disallignment of 1/2 of an inch... But it will be fixed. The flares will be fixed and a new panel for the light clusters housing and back will be welded to the rest... All in all it looked really good |
Very very glad to hear this. You really rolled with this one. We're looking forward to the finished product. Keep us in the loop with pics along the way!

If you are going to go with a 935 or ERP style front suspension, why are you also going to install the camber boxes and plates? The ERP front suspension allows you to gain all the negative camber you wish by adjusting the lower A arm, at the same time widening the track. This is a far better means of gaining the camber settings you want and it does not need the camber box or plates. You may want to reconsider doing both and perhaps save a few bucks.

Matteo:
U twin plugging that motor? I went with some CMW fabrication also. I do believe you will see those numbers at the flywheel. I'm looking forward to hearing more as it progresses. |

I think he's adding MOTEC for control and Individual Throttle Bodies for more response and more overall power. Doug |
You should easily get that power. My old mechanic in New Zealand has built two engines similar to this for his own race cars. The first was an IROC replica with a modern 3.5 litre interpretation of a 2.7RS engine, ie., S cams, twin plug, MOTEC efi and ITBs with race exhaust. Made 350hp and was pretty quick in a straight line compared to everything running around in classic racing in NZ 10 years ago. ie., muscle cars, cobra replicas, Porsches, hot E-types. It made 350hp and went to my knowledge 5 years without rebuild and with lots of racing. I lost touch with the car when it was sold. His current race car is narrow bodied and has a 3.6 litre interpretation of the same engine. Predictably, it makes 360hp. You are using a better cam grind and have more displacement. Good luck with your very cool project.

NICE!! Rocket II, eh?
|
The core is indeed a 993... so it is twin plugged. As Doug said I decided not to use the Varioram and go for the individual throttle bodies and Motec to increase the throttle response.
Max HP was not the goal... The decision to go from 3.6 to 3.9 was made so that I could choose more aggressive cams and still have enough torque for it to be very driveable. The cams are not as aggressive as the early S. The specs for the ealry S cams are the following Durations 0.40" I=268 E=240 with valve lift @.455" Durations 0.50" I=265 E=265 with valve lift @.399" The ones I went for have the following specs Durations 0.40" I=254 E=236 with valve lift @.490" Durations 0.40" I=247 E=230 with valve lift @ .455" For comparison the 3.8 supercup had I=248 E=242 with same vlave lift (for 0.40") and the 3.8 RSR had I=280 and E=275 (same lift). I really wanted to have a FUN engine. My 3.6 Varioram was powerful enough for the street. Most of the times I was either travelling at "losing license" speeds or at 2,500rpm.... I hope this engine will be more rev happy and I am really excited about the Throttle response... we'll see. |

I had trouble (rubbing on the inside) with the 275 tires when the car had T-bars. The coils will make it even more tricky and I was hoping the SRP towers and camber plates would give us more room (or flexibility) to play around with... |
any updates?
|
Actually the car is now at EUROWERKS.
I was going to get some pics tomorrow. The plan is to strip the interior, weld the sunroof, reinforce the front and rear shock towers and get the 935 suspension installed. Then the car will go back to the body-shop to be painted. On the engine front I decided to upgrade the rods (Carrillo) so now we are waiting for them to be delivered (they are already 1 week late). The Jenvey stuff should ship next week. Assembly will be quick, then there is the dyno tune up. Hoping to get done by the endo of February, second week of March. |
owch
I like those Fuchs |
So after a long wait all the engine componets arrived...
Here are some picks taken by my engine builder Steve Timmins http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1140385881.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1140385902.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1140385922.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1140385937.jpg http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1140385951.jpg |

Beautiful.............
|
Wow! That will be one sweet ride!
|
The not so good news comes from the chassis... After coming out of the frame machine (celine?) it is not as good as we all thought...
So I'll scrap the '88 tub. Luckily for me the guys at Zuffenhaus (where the car is being put together) have found a really nice rust-free, no-sunroof 74 tub. The tub had already been converted to widebody with some early style 930 rear flares. Keith and Aaron (the Zuffenhaus guys) will cut and open up the t-bar housing to fit the G-50 transmission. After that they'll reinforce the rear shock towers, weld the new front towers and a strut bar. Also I just ordered the RSR style front airflow pan from Elephant Racing http://forums.pelicanparts.com/uploa...1140387628.gif After all this is finished the car will go back to Import Paint and Body for a full Mexico Blue repaint... More pics soon! |
OMG - sure am looking forward to you comming to the UK now!
Good luck mate - yr gona need it! |
Wow ! Great stuff man. Awesome !
Kurt |
Thank goodness you don't have a budget.
|
Yeah, that stuff looks like junk...I hope you didnt pay that much for it. I mean look at the pistons, they are all high speed glazed or something. Not good at all...
;) |
Matteo
This looks like it's going to be a great project. Take lots of pictures so that we can all plan and dream based on your experience. Get lots of shots of the '74 tub as it is transformed and ask you engine builder to document the build with data and photos. I can't wait!! |
First Of All: I'll second the "Thank god you don't have a budget." comment.
Secondly, Now that you are going to have a '74 chassis why not put some more aggresive cams in that puppy. Emmissions NO LONGER MATTER! ...GOOD LUCK AND THAT IS GOING TO BE ONE AWESOME CAR. I CAN'T WAIT TO SEE ANOTHER MEXICO BLUE '74 OUT THERE SO PLEASE KEEP US POSTED WITH PIX AND UPDATES. ...lot's of them Cheers, JZ |
Budget? I am scared of putting it all on a spreadsheet... I have been purchasing items one by one... much easier...
Cam choice... I have spoken with Timmins and Camgrinder (Dougherty) about the DC22 choice. This is a street car (my daily driver) and even though I could have gained and extra 15-20hp up there the trade off was driveability. So... if I am really disappointed... we'll swap with something more aggressive later... Having to switch tub is somewhat of a blessing... we can start from the ground up and get rid of all the unnecessary things.... I am dreaming of 2,300lbs and 380 NA horses :D |
unbelievable wow
|
Those are some craaaazzzzzy nice parts. Good to see the unfortunate wreck is not killing the dream.
I am surprised though that they could not fix youre shell, since the dammage does not look bad at all. When you consider some wrecked cars that get repaired and repaired well at that. I Just hope the mechanic is not being a wuss by not fixing the shell and costing you more $$$. Second opinion would be a good idea but it looks like youre pretty committed your mechanic. If you can I would really apreciate some pics of the torsion tube cut and reinforcing of that area since I am also planing on going with a G50 also. Are you going to shorten the bell housing or just try to squeeze it in there? Now is youre chance to change colors, so whats it going to be? |
livin the dream. very nice!
|
That's going to be an awsome package when its done, I know it's more $$ but have you thought about a 6 spd G50?
|
god, how awesome..and mexico blue, too. i'd hate to guess at costs and a real shame to have to lose your orignal tub..i'm sure you were hoping to keep that if for none other than sentimental reasons. keep the updates coming!

I know where you might get a G50/31, got a spare $6k?

Fantastically interesting project. Thanks for sharing with us here.
Question - I don't recall seeing such heavy crosshatching on cylinder bores before. Is that really that coarse, or is it a photo anomaly??? Thanks again... |
