I jacked the car up yesterday and started to replace my torn boot only to find out that the 8mm 12 point was too small. I quickly ordered up a 10mm 12 point. Is this the correct size? Or did I assume incorectly?

10 mm sounds large.
On my SC, the bolts have an 8 mm thread and a 6-point Allen head. Some SC's may have a 12-point. Do a search for Carrera CV joints; to replace them requires removing the big nut (210 ft-lb!) from the rear wheel. You'll need a 3/4" drive socket for that one, a 1/2" will not do it!

I have all the required tools except for the 12 point. As stated above, the 8mm 12 point is too small. Its most likley a 10, but I jsut want to verify that. SCs are diffrent, they use M8 bots, Carreras have M10 bolts.

Double check that torque value on the axle nut, I seem to recall it being more like 325lb/ft. I bought a big impact and it did the trick for removal. When I tightened it up with the impact, I was VERY close to proper torque. Just a little nudge with a big torgue wrench to verify and I have been good for almost 2 years now.
Check your inner bolts on the tranny flange after installation, they have been known to come loose...... -Chris

Check your local auto parts store; many have the the triple square (12 point) sets up through 12 mm size. The prices are very reasonable and the strength/wear didn't seem much different from the Snap-On bits.

The SC Bentley calls for 300-320 Nm (217-231 ft-lb) for an M20 nut. It may be similar on the Carreras. Avon: If Carreras have M10 bolts (Meaning 10 mm threads) then I doubt it is an 10 mm Allen hex-head; let us know what you find. Carreras had 8 mm bolts in the first few years (With a smaller CV joint) They changed to a larger size around 1985. Thanks, Wil ![]()

Carrera's changed over from 8 mm to 10mm around 1985....within the model year production run....

See this thread for Carrera torque info, straight from John Walker. Confirmed with my Carrera Bentley. Well, the oil change went well......... However, the impact that I got DID in fact remove and reassemble the axle nut. Like I said, just a quick nudge with a proper torque wrench and all was good ![]() -Chris

10mm-12point Allen with new Schnorr washers should be good for another 10 years.
Wow! 320# ?? What size nut is that? On an SC, the nut is given as 20mm and 230# torque maximum. How much bigger is it on a Carrera? What is the thread size on a Carrera stub axle? Thanks.

The nut on the later (85.5 and up) axle is a big 'ol M22 x 1.5 self locking nut that is torqued to 460 Nm = 340 ft-lb (460 x 0.7375 = 339 and change)
I don't recall what the nut size is. I think it's 32mm

Yeah, it's a big one. My old IR impact had no chance. that's why I went out and got the 450# impact
![]() I think the nut is either something like 30-34mm, can't recall at the moment. The main thing is getting access to a torque wrench for proper tightening. I just drove it to my wrench with the center cap off the wheel and he snugged it up for me! -Chris

Nuts, nuts, nuts:
On any nut, the thread is the determining factor for torque values. So, when the nut size is given as M22 x 1.5 mm, it means the nut will fit a bolt with 22 mm diameter and a 1.5 mm pitch. The socket size for the hex is a different matter but has nothing to do with torque settings. KTL was correct with the nut-size. AvonGil: When you say: "Nope. Its a 32 mm nut", you surely mean the socket size, which doesn't help and is confusing. But socket-size is NOT used when ordering, or describing, any nuts; the thread dimension is the important factor. Cheers.
