Question Installing CA smog parts on a '78 Euro engine?

Okay, I just got back from the referee station to get my engine OK'ed for the CA smog exam, and it turns out I need a few parts:
1) EGR (Exhaust Gas Recirculation Valve)
2) Air Injection (line from distributor, air pump)
3) Gasoline Evaporator needs to be hooked up

How do I fabricate these into a Euro engine? Apparently a euro engine in a CA car is illegal, but the P.O. did it anyway
. How easy is this fabrication to do? Here's my current engine setup (Euro '78SC):

Thinking longer on it.....the previous owner if it was sold in CA is responsible for smog certification and you should never buy a car w/o getting a smog certificate.

You would probably better off getting a smog legal motor than modifying this one AND be $$ ahead. Sell this one and get a compliant one in trade. Parts Heaven in the Bay Area may swap you one for a few bucks less than the conversion would cost......I'm surprised that a ref would send you off with a list of mods as opposed to failing you on visual inspection.....

Here's the air injection setup. I removed mine from my 1980 Euro SC, I think US 78-79 models have the same setup.

Here's a closeup of the injectors.

BTW....when I purchased MY euro 911 I was surprised to see that it had a smog pump. The US and CA 83s didn't have them.....my records showed that it had been Federalized TWICE....once in Texas and then again to a stricter standard in CA.

CA wouldn't allow me to remove the pump even though I was able to show that CA model 83s didn't have one.

Over the years I have run up against CARB/BAR and the smog stations and it's best to transfer complete motors as opposed to modifying an existing one....trust me you do one thing and take it back and they say...oh that won't work....best to get a documented complete motor and transfer THAT.....with ALL the intake and exhaust without ANY changes.

Once past the referee then you can screw around a bit.....that will be in lesson number 2.

Wow, thats a lot of work! I thought it would be a small weekend project that would cost $200 tops! Trading it in as you all suggested would be a good idea (how about a 3.6 litre? ) Mike, don't you have a 3.6 in your cab.?

Yea, but then you've got the problem with a 964 or 993 engine in a early car. California is not friendly to engine swaps. Do some research though.

Good luck Matt.

BTW, is a 964 engine considered computerized? The pamplet I have says that if a computerized engine is installed in a non-computerized vehicle, the "check engine" light, OEM diagnostic link, and all sensors switches, and wiring harnesses needed to make the system functional must also be installed.

Yes and yes....

My question is...why did you get sent to the referee?

Matt-
How did you register your 911 in CA in the first place? The car would had to have been smogged. If you didn't get a "test only" smog notification then you may be able to fake it on some of this stuff. I took my 76 (which still has the 2.7) to a station in Lafayette and I had made a few appearance mods that made my engine pass the visual. The guy had to tweak things a bit on the rollers, but he got it to pass on the 3rd try.

Yes, the systems can be dummied up to look functional. If you get the right tester, they'll never know...

and it'll still pass if in good tune.

Jon, the previous owner smogged the car before I bought it. I just looked at the recipts from a smog shop in San Ramon. They passed everything on the car, even parts that were not there at all (i.e. catalytic converter, EGR Valve and pretty much everything else that the referee failed upon visual inspection. We are about to call our lawyer and go after these guys. Can someone give me:

An estimate on converting (adding all the parts necesssary) to the Euro '78 engine to make it a legal CA '78 engine?

You really can't.....that motor is not a CA approved motor. The best would be to put the CORRECT motor in it.

It's technically illegal to convert it unless it's done by a licensed Fedralizer and it in the SAME car that came from Europe.

Ask me how I know.

PS...I don't know WHAT those morons thought they were getting away with when they did the engine change and sold in CA. That car won't pass as is in CA. Get the DMV investigative division involved as well....
