Lightbulb MFI Message Board Index

The Technical Message Board Postings Index has been moved here from the Ultimate MFI Resources Thread because that listing exceeded the length allowed by this message board and to give them a more prominant position.

Please help build these two resource and add your links and other information.

1. PELICAN PARTS 911 TECHNICAL FORUM. The best 911 message board on the net!

MFI and Octane. Discusses the advantages and disadvantages of different octane fuels in MFI cars.

Motor break in with MFI. Step by step guide to breaking in a new or rebuilt MFI motor.

MFI with no oil return ?!?!?!?!. Discusses a pump modification which removes the oil feed/return lines. Also, has good discussion of why MFI runs better with a richer mixture.

MFI thermostat spacers. Terrific thread about MFI thermostat spacers, what they do and why a properly functioning thermostat is essential for a properly functioning MFI system.

MFI, 1972 warm-up issues (combined)
. L O N G thread which also contains lots of information about the MFI thermostat, miscelleneous cold start issues and having patience with the MFI system.

Using Protractors for correlation and Help with correlating MFI pump to throttle plates . Both discuss how to use MFI protractors for correlation and why following CMA is so important.

The MFI Diaries: Correlation at LAST! A wonderful explanation of how to use MFI protractors - with pictures!

MFI protractors not needed says Porsche Product Information Circular. Comments? Stating that the MFI protractors described in the factory workshop manual and CMA are no longer required to set proper correlation.

MFI Pump - Open Heart Surgery. Discusses the adjustment of the internal partial load adjustment screws in the MFI pump as well as other internal mysteries of the MFI pump.

Very technical MFI question.... Discusses the internal assembly of the MFI pump with excellent pictures and diagrams.

MFI Tools. Shows what tools are necessary for working on the MFI system and even discusses building the tools yourself. DOES NOT discuss the use of protractors.

MFI Induction Chart. Dimensions of the various MFI setups.

Resolving MFI problems and more MFI problems. Detailed threads about working through MFI problems using CMA as a guide.

Troubleshooting MFI problems. Another thread with loads of useful information about tracking down MFI problems.

MFI Gurus: one stack has little airflow, clean/adjust butterflys?. Why carbon buildup decreases air flow and how to remove it to improve air flow.

Grady/ Sherman(72 Guys) Ok now what?. Also discusses the problems with carbon buildup, vacuum problems, ignition/distributor issues and other problems that cause rough running

Cold Start Solenoid problems. Discusses cold start solenoid problems on pre-1970 MFI 911's.

MFI speed switch and fuel shut-off solenoid . Describes how the MFI speed switch and fuel shut-off solenoid work and has electrical diagrams posted by Warren Hall.

What PSI does an MFI FUEL pump (not injector pump) put out/need? and Braided Fuel Hose for a 72T MFI. Detailed discussion of MFI fuel pump specifications.

MFI electrical systems. Discussion about MFI electrical systems with a lot of very useful diagrams and schematics. More MFI electrical information can be found in Electrical Wiring Diagram for Early MFI Cars. These electrical wiring diagrams were converted by Derek Murray. Electrical diagrams for the early cars are also posted on the Rennlist website here.

Differences in Check, Measure Adjust Manuals.

2. PORSCHE CLUB OF AMERICA MFI TECH QUESTIONS. Put MFI related search terms (keywords) into the search box for advise from other MFI owners.

3. RENLIST TECH FORUM. Choose "web forums" from the first page and then 911 forums. (I can't link directly to the web forums from here for some reason) Become a member to search for advise from other MFI owners.

MFI Cold Start Problems by Robert C. Spindel. Explains the operation of the cold start solenoid.

4. The EARLY 811S REGISTRY has a good message board (not as good as Pelican). (I can't link directly to the web forums from here for some reason) Become a member to search for advise from other MFI owners.

Understanding and dialing-in the system for the first time. Detailed thread about setting up and troubleshooting an MFI system. Also discusses Hot Start issues.

Two new links added which discuss adjustment of the internal partial load adjustment screws as well as the internal assembly of the MFI pump.

Help build this resource and PM me with some of your favorite links, especially those from other message boards or links to resources on the web. I use Pelican and Rennlist almost exclusively.

I see a year since the last post. Is this thread still alive? I have a question.

Updating this and the Ultimate MFI resources thread has been on my to do list for a while now. With this storm coming, maybe I'll get a day off to work on it!

What's your question?

Milt, How goes it. Didn't know you were a MFI guy!
My question is: I am restoring 3 73 RS's, and I wonder if the relays and switch boxes that mount on the left rear engine compartment panel are still available. Also, the old OE style voltage regulators. A concour car doesn't make it with rusty crusty old parts in the visable engine bay.

I haven't heard of anyone selling these parts NOS but you might want to contact a specialist like Road and Race Inc, NOS & Vintage Porsche Parts Specialist. The only contact I have is their eBay page.

Road and Race Inc, NOS & Vintage Porsche Parts Specialist

I've never bought anything from them but their feedback is excellent.

Good Luck, maybe Milt will have a better idea!

Rick, I used soda blasting on a CDI unit a ways back and only the concours guy could see that it wasn't a new one off the shelf. The switches you speak of have a metal cover, correct? I think those could be re plated. Plastic restores up nice in most cases and I know you can get the correct wiring and sheathing to finish it off.

Whaddya mean MFI guy? You've already forgotten the Ragamuffin?

I've decided to try to update and make the MFI Message Board Index easier to use until the Pelican wiki is functioning. The separate posts are so that I have room to add additional links later.

The link is here.

What do you think?
