That all makes sense but it isn't good news. Porsche seems to be turning it's back on the classics in favor of the new car market. I totally agree, the Pelican, similar groups, websites and the experienced wrenches out there are great resources. Parts and accurate factory historical information are another story. Too bad the corporate leadership at Porsche won't loosen their grip on copyrights/patents and allow some of the better aftermarket guys more liberal access to original specs.
Someone told me that in Germany they don't look at a Porsche as having more than about a ten year life span. Could that be true and if so maybe another reason why they don't get it when we spend so much time on our older air cooled cars?

Can you give me any email addresses or contact information for the guys at Porsche who might be able to provide details on specific older models?

10 year is the minimum warranty for getting all spare parts for a car in germany, i think by law.
VW and all the others are easy...but japanese cars get difficult after the 10

I think Porsche knows about the history and they really use it, to sell all the new cars.
Eyery time i come to a Porsche dealer with my old car there is a big "Ohh"- nice ..

I stay in Munich today and on a short visit at the Porsche center.. i saw two 3.2 in front in the windows..not for sale, but like new. A red speedster 89 and an 88 CE cab. nice

Dont forget before they stopped the aircooled production, they were close to insolvency and now the bought Volkswagen...a big difference.

There was no commercial success for the cars(the air cooled-we like) in the end.

Every aircooled driver looks at his car, i think 70-80% of all porsches ever built are still alive and they advertise with that.
The prices in germany are higher than in the US at the moment.
Its impossible to buy one under 10K, i mean a wreck
Good cars before 1973 getting really high, 3.2 is absolutely modern.
Higher/same like a 964.
Especially for cars under 60kmiles.
Everything else is the same, if its pelican or a german Porscheboard.

Your insight is much appreciated. My contacts range from Frau Baer (race parts) to Kurt Myer, Jurgen Barth and many more (even Ferry Porsche when he was alive). Most now passed or retired as I am.

My reason for being an advocate for Porsche is to have PAG utilize the remarkable support they can have from us remaining old enthusiasts. The additional (most important) issue is to encourage the next generation. PAG seems to be ignoring their heritage except for marketing.

I totally agree PAG should be focused on 2011 & 2016 production whatever that may be. (Hopefully it still includes a 911GT.) On the other hand, I don’t think success will continue unless they pay attention to their heritage. Perhaps that is what the nay-slayers are looking at when they give PAG only a 10-year life.

I look at PAG foremost as one of the world’s foremost engineering companies. They focus on “automotive engineering” but to their benefit are inclusive of other disciplines.

PAG is also an automobile manufacturer of some note in the world. With his dad in a French prison, Herr Doctor–Ing. Ferry Porsche managed to start a wonderful little auto manufacturing company. With his skill and that of exceedingly talented staff, it progressed into a proper auto manufacturer. Along the way they recruited many supporters. Those names are the who’s-who of the Porsche world.

My lame attempt is to help PAG understand why that legacy is so important. It appears that somewhere here that may have been missed.

I think it is up to us to help PAG, not belittle. I am occasionally harsh on their apparent policies; but for proper motive. I want to see Porsche succeed far more than just the next 10 years. Who will own a Porsche in 2106?

Here's a picture of an old poster I have in my garage. Note the Dunlop Iron Driver's Cup sticker in the top right. I hosted the DIDC group in Arizona a few years ago with the top 25 winners (fun group). This was just before Goodyear bought them out. The President of Euro-Dunlop came back to AZ a few months later and went ATV (All Terrain Vehicle) riding with me on the Imperial Sand Dunes.

You are a wonderful advocate for our breed. Thank you for your efforts to keep the Porsche legacy on the front burner. As you said, older generation enthusiasts (addicts) like us are the ones who will pass the spirit of Porsche on to the next generation. You are far from "lame" my friend. My level of knowledge is downright amature compared to yours but it's sincere.

Yeah, but the father is usually referred to as "professor" and the son is commonly referred to as "doctor".

The way I see it as a P-owner for the last 30 years, resources for parts, maintenance, and technical support was never better!

Imagine back in the late 70's or early 80's when the only place for technical support was "technical notes" in Panorama?! No internet, no bunch of P-heads sharing info, no parts catalogs accept JC Whitney (hey will that VW part fit here?), and basically you were on your own.

Today, between this fantastic resource of Porsche people, 101 Projects, Haynes and Bentley Repair manuals, Excellence Magazine, Rennsport, and a huge number of parts houses, keeping your older 911 going has never been greater. Do not consider the Porsche dealer a deadend either. They want as much as the parts supply business as anyone else and often in some dusty Stuttgard warehouse is that illusive wire or fitting that no one else can come up with.

Its a great time to own an older 911.
