Plug #1 wire R or L of Dizzy clip?

1977 911S 2.7L

I need to verify the correct position of the #1 cylinder plug wire as it goes into the distributor. The cap tie down clip nearest the cooling fan housing is my reference point. In some photos it appears to be left of the clip, other photos right of the clip.

I am trying to do my ignition timing and wish to verify that the plug wires are in correctly before jumping to conclusions and worring about re-indexing the distributor.

Plug #1 wire R or L of Dizzy clip?

Does anyone have a diagram for all plug to cap locations?

1. I read that the rotor spins counterclockwise.

2. The owner's manual says the firing order is 1-6-2-4-3-5

A: Is there a first position for the rotor to hit for cylinder #1.

B: If so is that right or left of the hold down clip nearest the inside/fan?

#1 can be anywhere as long as the rotor is on it at TDC of a compression stroke.

My #1 wire is centered on the fan housing. To the right of the clip.

Mine appears to be to the right as well, the later SC's are to the left. This is why half the photos I looked at confused me.

From this link I found the slot which locates the number one cylinder firing location - mine is right of the clip.

Gunter; Yes, all SC 3.0 liter engine distributors rotate CCW (counter-clockwise). The Bentley SC manual shows CW by mistake. All other Porsche engines have the distributor run CW.

Yep, my car is CLOCKWISE!!!!!

Don't ask me how I found this out.

Tap the motor around until you're at TDC. The rotor will either be pointing at #1 or 180 degrees away from it.

TerryH - Kash's motor runs, he is only trying to improve the timing.

Kash22i - The difference in left or right of the clip may be due to the fact that some distributors turn opposite to other cars. From what TerryH says, it sounds like your #1 is in the correct location. Check you timing there, and see if you can adjust it using the available adjustment in the distributor housing slot - you may be fine right where you are.

Kach22i,

I think your distributor turns clockwise. Looking back at the picture you sent of it, I'm sure it turns clockwise. Do you have the correct manual for your year and engine?

Your distributor turns clockwise and #1 should be just to the right of the clip.

Rex, it looks like I'm screwed.

The dizzy is all the way in the slot one way and it's not enough.

When I adjust it in the only direction I can the engine slows down and wants to stall, and the timing marks mover even farther off center to the right when looking from the back to the car to the front.

Now what?

The timing marks are between 3/8" to 1/2" to the right of center depending if you want 5-12 degrees of advance at idle.

The only good news is that at 6,000 RPM it's the same 3/8" to 1/2" off to the right measurement from the tick mark on the bottom of the fan housing.

IMHO.......... "you" should learn to find TDC on the motor. Remove the plugs and the valve covers so you can spin the motor by hand and find TDC on number one. Yep, do it yourself!! Learn from it. Next time you will have knowlage of what you are doing and "why". Learn don't ask us to give it to you! This board sometimes give to much away!

It's getting dark here, the rain held off but I gotta pick up my tools and call it a night.

1. What is re-indexing the distributor?

2. Is this my next step getting the timing right?

My sad little engine.

He was asking how to find where the #1 plug wire attached on the cap and I suggested letting the rotor point it out. It's surefire regardless of which way the rotor turns or how the distributor was indexed.

Good idea, but Rex already knew from another thread earlier what a novice I am and more of my situation.

I need eveyone's help to get me though this one.

All 911 distributors except 3.0t, 3.0SC and 3.3 t spin clockwise.

#1 will be to the right of the cap clip nearest the fan, #6 is next clockwise, followed by 2, 4, 3, 5

Thanks for the input, but I can see that it's time to start a new thread or go back to the one I was posting on this afternoon.

The original question has not only been answered several times but learned the hard way by myself.

Why isn't the whole clockwise counter-clockwise issue explained with the firing order? Would save a lot of heartache.
