Remove Differential while in Car?

I'm going to try and remove the differential* with the transmission still in the car.

Who has done this and what do I need to watch out for?

For example, will I be able to get the differential out with the heat exchanger there (it's an SSI)? Or am I going to have to remove the heat exchanger too?

Thanks!

* It's a 1971 type 911 transmission and I need to do the simplified differential fix before it blows itself up.

Randy, I have to ask why? I can't see you saving any time doing it this way and it seems it would be a lot easier to work on the tranny with it sitting on your workbench then under the car.

it's a hell of a lot easier if I don't have to pull the entire engine & trans.

we seem to have reached a difference of opinion..what they call an 'impasse'..two immovable schools of thought, passing like great ships in the night..

easy. axles disconnected from flanges and tied out of the way, flanges off, side cover off, and watch your feet.

Thanks, John. I don't have access to a lift anymore so I'll be in a bench-press position...
