AC condensor fan

I have an 86 Carrera that I have put all new hoses and components for the AC system in. I have good cold air again. The fan in the front that blows on the front condensor is not getting any power. I have tried all different settings. I see in Bentley that there is a relay for this circut. Can you tell me where it is located and how can I test its operation? I have checked the fuses. Thanks

Relay on the earlier 911 such as my 82sc was located in the smuggler box.

You can spend beaucoup bucks and buy a Porsche genuine part that is made in China or go to rat shack and buy their automtive relay which is a direct fit for under 5 bucks.

The relay in the smugglers box for the A/C....which used to have an internal diode prior to '88...was updated in '88 to include an "external" jumpered connection and an installed fuse.

Alan Caldwell who writes on such matters in Panorama.... also described this change and it made no sense to him, (nor to me ....nor to any other person who understands electrical circuitry).

I went ahead and installed this goofy updated relay anyway.... can anyone here explain the function of the external fuse ??

The fuse is to keep the car from burning up when the fan siezes, which has happened hundreds of times in the field.

If your car does not have a fuse in the inline power wiring to the condenser fan, it needs one.

Joeaksa

You're confusing the front condenser fuse addition ( 7.5A ATO style added by the factory in '88)...with the external fuse that piggy-backs on the relay mounted in the smugglers box. Neither I nor even Alan Caldwell from Pano...who writes about such things....can explain the logic for this piggy-back arrangement.....

It's not difficult, but it is a dirty time-consuming job. The hardest part for me was snaking the hoses into the engine compartment with the ends attached. Some people have bought bulk hose and then have the ends crimped after installation.

The bottom line is that it's a very DIY-able job.

I had this same issue on my '89 and it turned out to be a bad relay....it should be up front, in the trunk fuse box.
