16x8 Fuchs on a narrow-bodied Targa

I just wanted to share a little success story in my ongoing quest to get the Targa more suitable for the track.

We installed 16x8 Fuchs 951 in the rear with 225-50-16 Kumho MX and put the 16x7 with 205-55-16 to the front. With the addition of a duck tail and a strut brace the car is totally transformed. It turns in great, corners awesome and at high speeds the stability is greatly improved. As a bonus I get much better cooling. A well-known capacity in 911 expertise opened his bag of tricks and did a great job to get me closer to a track-ready everyday-driver. Willow Springs I am ready.

Cheers,
Ingo

I guess the camber has to be adjusted to fit properly.. I would like to do 7 X 16 on all 4s because the SO-3s w/ 6 X 16 raised the car about 3/8in over the same size, 205 x 55, RE-71s.. But I don't want a camber that'll wear the tires. I gotta be able to rotate tires when I go for a ride is why I need all 4 the same size.

and Tyson..
I'm presently doing the carb plumbing as per your advice of a continuous loop. I'm using the Holley fuel regulator after the carbs/ before the return. I also found a large 5# gauge. Richard Parr wants a pic when completed for Maybe using the pic on his site. Thanks again for straightning out what I need to do.

so what does the 951 difference translate to as opposed to a regular 911 8" wheel?

Very cool Ron! I hope it goes well.

Yeah, I had to crank in about 3 degrees negative camber for clearance. But dang, that thing oughta stick in the corners now!

They extend more inboard due to its smaller offset.

Actually the offset on the 951 wheels is 23.3mm and the offset on the 911 is 10.6mm, but the effect is push the wheel inboard, ljust like a 7x16.

Nice work, I could only get a 225/45-16 in.

How much neg camber do you have, and how is the oil line clearance??

-3 degrees. OH yeah.

I think you're going to like those Kumhos. I feel they're excellent tires. Compared to other tires i've driven on in the 911 (Goodyear Gatorbacks, Yoko ES100, Sumitomo HTRZII, Dunlop 4000), these tires have much stiffer sidewalls and are much more responsive. Grip is great and they start with a bit less tread depth than your typical tire. Excellent tire for the money in my opinion. And they look cool. Wish more people would try them! Be sure to post your impressions of them to enlight other people.

Oil line clearance should be fine. Had no problem on my car with the same basic wheel (actually a 16x8 +23.3mm o/s 951 phone dial) shod with a 245/45 Yoko ES100.

I wish I could have seen this thread _before_ I stuffed my 15x8 Fuchs under the rear of my narrow body Targa. I could have saved myself the horror of denting the crap out of my fenders from the rolling. Ah well, whats done is done. Amazing how much of a difference an inch makes in the feel of the car though, huh? The 15x6s made it drive like a wet-noodle, but the 7s and 8s transformed it into a rock-solid autobahn burner.

Iscmitz and Marc:
So if the *offset* is the same...then the *backspace* for the 1" wider rim puts all of that extra width on the inside......
---Wil

Edit:
I need to make a correction:
8" 911 piece is 10.6mm offset, 112 mm backspace
8" 951 piece is 23 mm offset, 125 mm backspace.

If this is true...then the 951 piece places the wheel about 13mm ( say, 1/2") closer inboard than the 911 piece.

Sorry....

No, o/s is the distance from the wheel centerline to the hub mounting face.

look at the 2nd and 4th from the bottom wheels in this diagram.

They have the same o/s but one is 1" wider than the other.

I run a little more than 3 degrees negative, and drive the car about five days a week on the street. I'm always surprised by how even the wear is, considering.

Maybe the secret is to avoid straight roads at all costs.

Nice job Ingo! How much room to have left between you tires and the spring plates?

Have you guys seen the custom 2 piece 8s on the front of Mark's Duck? Bigger offset, pushing more of the wheel inside. I think they would work on the back of the narrow arse cars without too much trouble.
