Done been backdated!
Well, today I finally installed the 2.2 engine heater ducts I modified to work on my 3.0 engine. Thanks to John Walker for lending me the pattern for where to cut out the piece of tin and weld in the patch section to clear the bigger distributor on the left side duct. I thought my welds turned out very pretty, here's the before and after with media blasting and painting on those pieces:

Don't know if you noticed or not but Pelican has a set of new Dansk stainless steel heat exchangers for our cars for $780. That's a pretty good deal. They're not true SSI's, but still very nice HE's nonetheless and very hard to beat for that price. I bumped the ad to the top of the used parts list so you could find it more easily. Best, Dan

why did you have to cut and weld?? Mine fit right in? Maybe mine was modified before?? Did not appear so. just curious

Hey Dan, I want these high performance old style 2-in-1-out style SSI headers (another future backdate project): ![]() Not the same 1-in-1-out style muffler that I already have on the car. Hey Ben... by chance did you leave your distributor cap on when you installed the unmodified left side duct? I don't think you can get at the back distributor cap clip easily without cutting out the chunk like I had to. |

Darryl mine did fit without mods too but it was a very tight fit. Nice work btw ! looks great.

Daryl it looks great, an absolute must do for 3.0 and 3.2s IMHO.
FYI, The headers Dan is talking about are almost Identical to the SSIs. They are a 2 out design. Dansk makes mufflers and heat exchangers/headers. They are less expensive than the SSIs.

yay!!! thanks for the inspiration. i have been a loser lately. i have just done the driver's side. on my SC, i just needed to dent the area that one spark plug wire boot took up. so needless to say, my mod doesnt look all cool like yours. the pass side, i am gonna ditch the AC, and go from there. painful part is that i have the entire AC system that mark wilson installed (in his SC)sitting in my office, ready to go. procooler, serpentine thingy, barrier hose...everything. prelim measurements make me think i can backdate and still keep the smaller new compressor...
for the record, the backdate looks better with the CIS cars that have the soft injector lines. my hard lines really stand out. nice job!

Aside from the obvious better looks and access, does this help any with cooling ? (less stuff
diverting air flow under the lid?) I need to look into this as well, I just bought back my old 83SC from the guy I sold it to 6 years ago, and this seems like a nice mod. Are those parts for sale anywhere or is it a fabrication job like most of Daryl's incredible work ? |

Does zip for 'cooling', depends on engine revs for airflow, for me it works just fine even up here in WA State where it is known to be damp.....
Plus it looks a hell of a lot better.

I'll have to take you guys word for the 3.0 distributor clearing the left duct without modification. All I know is it looked as though the distributor cap and rear clip would have actually made contact with mine if I didn't. I rather like the "luxury" of being able to see the rear clip as I attach the cap and not have any contact with the plug wires against metal ducting.

I tried all the usual sources, EASY, Parts Heaven, etc. and finally found my set on eBay after about of year of being outbid by every f#@&ing sniper on the planet bidding on Porsche parts! I figured about $200 a set for used metal ones is a decent price considering what new plastic or repro fiberglass ones go for, plus I like things I can weld! The early 2.0 ones were all metal on both sides, the 2.2 and later used plastic on the right side "elbow" that ducts into the shroud. I appreciate all the positive feedback on my work! I'd suggest having John Walker do the mod for you if you're not equipped to do it yourself. |

Yeah Dan, I'm one of those guys who places a bid for the max amount I'm willing to pay for an item on eBay and then just forget about it until I get the "you won" notice in my e-mail.
Sometimes I get great deals, like $31 for a used but serviceable 1-in-1-out muffler for my 911 or $150 for a nice set of Solex single shaft 40-PII carbs for my 912. I do get some satisfaction of out watching a death spiral between snipers on an item where they both bid way too high at the last moment and pay 3x what I bid for the item... poetic justice! ![]() |

Yep Jake, guilty as charged! I figure anybody who sees my nearly 400 positive feedback points and early bidding strategy knows they better really want what they're about to bid on!
![]() I tend to study the "market" for items I'm bidding on so I don't feel sleazy (in an instant gratification kind of way) about the amount I'm offering. It seems like I eventually get what I'm after at the price I'm willing to pay if I'm patient. I've also noticed that when something considered "rare" that I want goes for a really high price on eBay, they start coming "out-of-the-woodwork" with sellers hoping for a similar prices for theirs and saturating the market, driving down the price. Take original orange hood badges for example of this effect. Ok, ok, I know, next stop... "Hi, my name is Darryl and I'm a compulsive eBay user..." |
