Setting up a differential (preload and backlash) DIY?

Looks pretty simple, requires $70 or so bucks in tools.

How different is it to do this for a 911 diff?

The reason I ask Is I would like to add an LSD but the labor to have it installed ans set up scared me away.

As long as you can use your existing ring and pinion it might be manageable. Measuring backlash is relatively easy, as long as you know the pinion is set at the correct depth. Setting the bearing preload shouldn't be too big of a deal either. If you are starting without the confidence that the pinion is where it should be, matters become more complicated, as the tool to check the pinion depth is hard to come by. Some people have dealt with backlash and mesh patterns recently. If you do a search you should find some relevant, recent threads. Sorry I can't remember specific titles.

If it is a factory ZF LSD ... it is identical in dimensions to the existing open differential, so it is a direct bolt-in swap with no required changes to the setup. Plastigauge can be used to verify the current clearance during assembly!

Scott, can you define "the pinion is where it should be" more?

I mean the fore/aft position of the pinion along the long axis of the car. This is the measurement that requires the special, expensive tool. Without the tool, a protracted series of trial and error trial installations are required (unless you are really lucky).
