Oxygen sensor too short after SSI install

On my 81 SC the OS was further upstream in the exhaust than it is with the new SSIs. Do I need to just splice wire into it for the extra length or is there some kind of extension made?

Splice the wire but please don't use electrical tape. On a side note, hold old is your O2? This may be a good time to replace it.

The wire on Bosch sensors is a Mil-spec Type EE AWG 20 ga Teflon-insulated, silver-plated copper stranded wire. Splices should be soldered or crimped with a non-insulated termination covered with a piece of HD shrink-wrap.

Do NOT be tempted to use an ordinary piece of PVC-insulated wire, as it won't stand up to temperatures in the vicinity of the exhaust system!!! It will char and crack ... leaving the bare wire subject to shorting out!

http://www.alliedelec.com/catalog/pf.asp?fn=393.pdf&Catalog=&PageNum=393

If you have an old oxygen sensor laying around on a shelf ... you can salvage the wire from it.

ps .... link fixed

The link didn't work.
Also is this a 2 wire sensor?
Does anyone make an extension?
Finally what did all the others who added SSIs to their SC do?

As far as I know, there is no such thing as an extension. Also, when I purchased a new O2 sensor I found the wire to be more than long enough (I have B&B headers, not SSI so I don't know if there is a difference).

On the original cat the OS was directly below a hole in the tin which it went through with a plug. Now the OS bung is at least 6-8 inches to the rear. I bought a new OS last year so I don't want to invest in another.

No extension that I know of.
The factory wire is a coax and only the inner wire is used for signal. If you splice to the outer wire it will not work.

There must be SC owners who installed SSIs. Please sound off on this.

By the "butt connector" do you mean the part that plugs in on the left side of the engine compartment? Was the wire longer than the original one? How much is the universal Bosch OS?

Thanks. So this connects to the connector that is at the harness end of the sensor?

The butt connector can't be PVC insulated though, can it?

I've been told the wire is coaxial. I guess the supplied connector works for that.

rs6er,

The 911SC oxygen sensor is a single wire design, and it isn't coaxial! Whether OEM or universal ... the wire is stranded, Teflon-insulated as described above. The Bosch 11027 universal single-wire sensor is $21.49 at NAPA, and comes with the butt-splice connector already attached to the Teflon wire, and a piece of nonflammable polyolefin shrink wrap to cover the splice.

The Bosch 11027 has about 2 1/2" of wire on it. No way is that going to help me reach from the SSI to the plug inside the engine compartment.
