Question about 911rs project

I wish to start yet another 73 rs racer project. I just love the look of those older styles 911's. My question is can I get a newer model 911, eg. 77-84 911, and backwards convert it to resemble a 73 rs. I figure it already has the flares and a more torquey motor, so all I got to do is to install a ducktail and rs bumpers right? Oh and R grupe, please have mercy on me for asking this question. Thank you all for your response!

Yes it can be done you will also need early front fenders and hood, chrome door tops and side window frames.

Search for the ultimate backdating thread. Much info you can use. There have been several members here that backdated cars to the long hood look.

You'll need to do some cutting and welding to replace the front clip front end.

No ! .... no extra cutting and welding needed if the method used in the ultimate backdating thread is used....

....if you don't mind a small seam to show on the front fender area..this can be leaded or glassed-over if done permanently...if the seam still shows, then you can "update" ( reverse the process anytime)...sweet !

I think Cliff is talking about the front trunk and the receiver area for the latch, and Wil is talking about the fender area around the horn grilles?

You don't need to weld in a front end for the sake of the latch. TRE Motorsports sells a long hood with the latch moved to the later position.

I believe the kit offered by Damon (Series 900) has the funky front latch system that does NOT require the usual cutting /welding so often necessary otherwise....the posted thread is a long one but I'm sure it's "in there".

Yes, the seam is a separate issue but the reversibility note still applies if you keep the seam.

Thumbs up

Great, thank you for all the replys, and bb80sc/Brad, thanks for the posting your pic I can use for inspiration.

Oh and to Jack Olsen, I love your car, after I saw it on the boards, it is what got me started looking into another project. Ideally it would end up looking something like blackbeauty I.

For those interested, TRE Motorsports and Automotive Innovations and Restorations (both in L.A.) did the work. It's a pretty awesome makeover!
